The players were listed as examples and yes Chapman on short deal as well.

I guess when I see names brought up, I like to see how they fit the roster.  Martinez and Turner didn't fit defensively or as bench options.  That's part of the reason I really like the Canha trade.  The Tigers needed a RHH OF and a backup 1B, among other things.  He fit both defensively and has the kind of bat that the lineup needed.

No, everyone there beside you was opposing team fans lol because Randy Smith had built such a pathetic team. I remember going to Tiger Stadium as a kid when the Indians would come to town and there would be more Indians fans than Tigers fans because we were so bad.

This is just as false as false can be.  Deer was a Tiger from 1991 through mid 1993.  Cleveland's first winning season eva was 1994.  I'm not even sure baseball was acknowledged in Cleveland before that.  They played in a football stadium for crying out loud.

  3. A long, long, long, long time ago, I was wandering the concourse of Tiger Stadium before a game.  I have no idea where they came from, but Deer and Trammell were walking ahead of me.  And then they opened some door and vanished just like that.  There were others on the concourse, but nobody bugged them along that short stroll.  I guess everybody else was too gobsmacked to see players walking around there like I was.

I am good with Harris and Hinch. No need for DD and Smokes. I like the direction of the team etc but I just wish the urgency was ticked up a bit. By that I mean adding a player or two on short term contracts via free agency. We could have had JD or Turner for one year as an example. They didn't need to play every day and the youngsters could have been brought along with a bit less playing time. They can be traded or just cut when the kids settle in and start hitting.

I don't like the blanket statements like "year one is for evaluating what we have" and "this year we will struggle to hit as we provide runway for the newbies ". Both of those can be accomplished while still adding some veteran players to help us win and take some pressure off the youngsters as well. It's ok to platoon your first year in the bigs or play part time.

We've had nice start to 2024 but look how much of it is attributed to Mark Cahna and Urshela. We could have had one or two more vets as well and still played Meadows, Keith, Wencel, Tork and Verling etc plenty.  Spend a few million each year on one year stop gap players until we don't need to. Make winning today just as important as developing for tomorrow. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I'm not sure where Martinez or Turner would have fit on this roster.  I think they needed a 3B and another RHH OF (preferably CF).  They were pretty much elsewhere heading into camp, whether or not the options were liked (see, Baez).  I'm not sure Turner would have worked out defensively at 3B and Martinez is probably only a DH at this point.

I was interested in Matt Chapman on a shorter deal despite his cascading offense last season.  He's at .211/.261/.340 so far, so perhaps the downfall is more career trajectory rather than blip on the radar?

  5. I kind of wonder if the hat would work better with an Old English "MC" as opposed to the slanted "DETROIT"?  I understand these city connects are supposed to be a break from the normal, but I think incorporating tradition would work.

Other than that, these rags suck out loud and there's no helping them.

I don't think it should take five years from now, or even from August 2022, for us to finally become competitive. My original thought was that if we are not competing for a playoff spot, if not Central title, by 2025, something is going wrong, and I will stick with that.

    I think this sounds reasonable.

But besides the shorter term merits of the major league team, Harris also needs to get the minor leagues in order.  It sounds like that is being done.  Now, perhaps the earliest fruit from those improvements can be a part of next season’s MLB team, but that might be pushing it.

There's people calling for his head after just 1 1/2 years? One draft? Get back to me in 3 more years. We can't be firing our GM every two years. And I thought I was impatient...

There probably are a few people calling for Harris’ head, but are they worth listening to?

Too me SHarris needs to show that he can acquire a strong bat or two via trade or FA. This has nothing to do with how many years on the job. Regardless of 1 year or 5, he needs to show that 'he can make a deal, that he has the ability and/or the art of negotiating a solid deal for a hitter or two'...  Yes, scouting has to help and say 'here is a list' - but it does not take 5 years to do that. He could do that anytime between now and say 1-2 years - my Q is, like DD could or unlike AA could not - can SHarris do this?

Well, he did trade for Canha.  If not a strong bat, certainly an above league average bat.

We can go through the lineup and see the offensive deficiency so far this season is the IF (save for Vierling) and catcher.  The OF/DH/3B has been around or above career OPS on an individual basis (and we can debate CF with Meadows/Perez as inconclusive, that's fine).  But Baez has been abysmal at the plate.  Torkelson seems to have regressed.  Keith has scuffled more than expected.  I think the catching duo is below .600 OPS.  Where would this team be with nominal production at those positions?

    Just stop leading Greene off...😁😁

Greene is still young and at the beginning of his career.  But his resume is actually worse with runners in scoring position than not.  Seems contrary to the rest of the league, and I wouldn't necessarily try to put him into a position where he can avoid runners in scoring position.  But I'm comfortable with him in the top third of the order, leadoff included.

    At least five years? 🤣

    Nah, bro.

Five years is too long.  There's room to add salary (although it wasn't a good free agent offseason).  The pitching is already competitive.  There are a few hitters to work with currently.  I can understand going through some of the prospects to see what's there.  But at some point they need to improve the offense, and it shouldn't take five years.
