I am a fan of indie movies and the kind of movies that don't make a ton of money and don't play at AMC or Emagine. The Main Art in Royal Oak, basic as it was, was the best filmhouse this side of Ann Arbor. It closed. Landlord just kicked 'em out one day and I guess the people who ran the place weren't really given any notice. That's always a class move. If cowardly is class.
Developers want to demolish it and make it...............wait for it............"a multi-use facility". You know, stores and apartments that no actual regular working person can really afford. Great, we needed more of those. But the biggest insult of all is they want to keep the marquee.
Fuckin' tone deaf, man. I guess there's till the Maple Art........for now.
With all this luxury shit going up and house prices going through the roof, what the hell is going to happen to most people? There has to be and end point to all this, right? They are being priced right out of a decent life. Detroit went from a bombed-out slum to a bunch of hoity-toity places where every price is jacked up (the fraud and utter bullshit that is Shinola). Working people haven't really had a chance to experience the new Detroit, and the next time the economy crashes, the rich will flee again and it will go right back to what it was. Championing $15 an hour is fashionable. $15 would have meant something seven or eight years ago when people were asking for it. The way things are going, that would be closer to $20 to $25 an hour now. A lot of people rip on millennials, but they really are getting fucked.
