  1. I didn't open up Twitter to check on that, just assumed it was them, my bad. But in the words of Biden "C'mon Man", you try to point out that people share news on Facebook (not that I ever disputed that), but the first place you go to in order to get it is Twitter? You have to admit that's funny. You guys win though. I'm back to my conservative ways which apparently means I should be full libertarian. Completely unadulterated free market capitalism is the way to go. FCC over there putting restrictions is a violation of the 1st amendment or laws requiring newspapers to print public notices...sheesh. You want it in there gov't, you can pay for it.
  2. This has gone off of the rails even though I do have what I think is a valid response to this... i'm going to try and get back to my original point. Twitter, IMO, drives day to day news cycles. In terms of people that make news, reporters, editors, journalists, producers, they monitor twitter, use it to promote their work, and sometimes use it as a publishing tool to give added though or opinions to other work. I personally don't see that type of interaction, at that scale at least, on Facebook, TikTok, Instagram.
  3. And Facebook chose Twitter as the place to publish this news.
  4. And yet you went to Twitter to get this Facebook news.
  5. I'm not even asking to hold social media to the same standards as publishers, I'm just saying some oversight could be beneficial for everyone, including the social media folks themselves. NYT, Washington Post, CNN, they all have some oversight and I've never heard anyone claim that was a violation of the first amendment. I'm not even calling for anything specific here, i'm just saying if you have this much power (enough to flip the 2016 election to Trump per quite a few of my democratic friends), then maybe the government should make sure it's not being abused. The oddest thing is that line of thinking is more in line with what I always thought the democratic party wanted more of.
  6. Show of hands from everyone, how many of you follow your favorite journalist on Facebook? How many folks have more than one journalist they follow on Twitter? In terms of folks searching out for breaking news, news in general, or reaction to news, what is bigger than Twitter?
  7. Which again, is almost like why maybe our government could provide some oversight on it.....IMO.
  8. Except it was mentioned, in the very first Twitter files. In fact I remember on this very site it was specifically called out to show government corruption against Trump because he was the president at the time, whereas Biden was just a private citizen.
  9. Whatever you're smoking, please just don't drive. Fox news definitely has it's target audience and is absolutely influential to them, but do their primetime folks even get 2 million viewers anymore? Yet a person with 20 followers can put out some random tweet that manages to go viral and it can control a news cycle for a day. And on days that doesn't happen, it's the first place journalist go to push folks to their individual sites. Twitter is far more influential in determining what our news is on a day to day basis than any one single form of media ever. I don't remember ever saying I didn't have an issue with that. Overall I think this is an unfair argument. You're over hear arguing with me over Twitter, I don't see you condemning political corruption, or black men dying at the hands of policing. Why don't you care about those?
  10. I don't think so, because 1) they had the power not to be influenced by the govt and 2) they chose which government members they'd listen to.
  11. I'm focusing on Twitter because it's the big dog in the social media world when we're talking about sharing news and in many cases publishing news. But it's not held up to a higher standard than Fox News, or any other publisher, in fact it has a much lower standard. IMO, it was an issue when it resulted in a small group of private citizens deciding what would be the days talking points. Now with Elon, it's no longer an issue for a large constituency of the population, yet for some reason the other half now have some complaints about it. The correct view of it is that it was a problem before, and it's a problem now. And if the current owner of it truly believes it should be the town square, it should some government oversight.
  12. It's definitely a strange world where one of the lone 'conservatives' on this site is the one pointing out issues with unfettered corporations, such as Twitter with the power to determine the news as the nations town square and the response from the liberals is that we should celebrate the free market.
  13. I honestly haven't noticed much in terms of glitches with it. I know there was a big deal about some broken two factor authentication for locked out accounts but working in tech I hear about some major company having some type of application issue regularly.
  14. Big difference with the bombing, and I hate to say it, but I'm saying it based on how the Russians view it.... those were just people. The pipeline, that was money to fix, possibly needing to rebuild completely, and assuming this war ends in the next year or two, lost production. Note though, i'm not saying the US did it or that Russia didn't do it. Lots of compelling reasons for many countries to do it and a hell of a lot of risk if they got caught too.
  15. While I never tweet and rarely retweet, I use it daily. Seems like once a year I need to 'clean it up' in order to ensure I'm seeing what I want. Just because you've seen some stuff you would prefer to have seen blocked, doesn't mean they didn't shadow ban in the past.
  16. Almost seems like folks realize the harm that can cause once the bias doesn't lean towards them.
  17. I'm not saying the MTG folks that care about making the biggest headlines aren't upset about that. But I'm equally flustered by folks that lump in those dick pics with legitimate emails which detail a lot more business ties, and some wording that doesn't sound all that legit (10% for the big guy). It's awfully convenient to just keep saying dick pics though.
  18. I wasn't aware of Hersch until I saw the back and forth of him on Twitter and I do remember his take on Bin Laden. Sounds like most of the journalism world has a similar view as Pfife. He claims he has a source within the Navy and pointed to Biden saying Nord2 won't be around if Russia invades. Weak sauce if a big part of your argument is a comment like that from Biden. That said, a few weeks ago I read how European intelligence says Russia has been moving forward quietly on fixing the pipeline which had them questioning why they would be working to fix them if they bombed them.
  19. I read nearly all of the Twitter Files, it absolutely pointed out attempts by members of both parties, but it also pointed out the difference in which ones they chose to listen to. Twitter employee's weren't big into 'both sidsin', so i'm not surprised nearly no one here had any issues with civilians in a private company with such a monopoly on spreading news within this nation picking and choosing what folks see.
  20. Finally started watching The Wire. Never watched it originally and eventually just assumed it was too old. I recently saw another top 20 TV show list and it claimed it held up. I'm into season 2 now. Very well done and holds up nicely. Currently wouldn't put it at #1 like that list that led me here claimed, but very solid after all of these years.
  21. Speech is over and I was taking notes...this seemed wild, wonder how it'll play out. Here are my notes with some context to them. He's having trouble getting through this - Seemed to have more trouble than usual with some wording. It's Biden, but still, seemed to struggle a bit. Made in America - He still has a pulse on America, certainly more so then his party (IMO). This is how you reach out to voters that have moved away from you (Macomb county for instance) without losing your base. I'm all on board with this. Big Pharma smackdown - overall I like it, but the cynic in me wonders if it's a quid pro quo with Big Pharma and both parties. The government will continue to push Covid vaccines, you give us cheaper insulin. We've moved into the shit show portion of the event with Cruella Deville, err, I mean MTG. What an embarrassment. And McCarthy trying to shush her, like you have any power you cuck. Holy shit - Have we ever seen a president negotiate an agreement in SOTU? Well we have now. He stands up to MTG and essentially tricks them into agreeing not to go after entitlements. That was amazing. The Tyre Nichols discussion was OK. I'm not saying I want qualified immunity completely removed, but maybe pushing on that might actually result in some of the changes he talked about. I just don't see this going anyway, it never does. As an aside, am I the only white person that had 'the talk' about police with their parents and once their kids are older, their kids too? Window down, interior lights on if at night, hands on the wheel until you're told to get your license, no quick movements, be polite.....?
  22. Punt huh? Ironic that you were still so close.
  23. Not 'at least this time', but 'at least at this time.' Call me wishy/washy, but I want more of the story before I get to making a definitive statement especially on a developing story.
  24. I certainly didn't mean to say there was no truth to it, but I fully admit I am taking the information with a grain of salt, at least at this time.
  25. I was referring to the dem talking points we saw yesterday, that it's silly to even take this seriously (china already has satellites, tiktok, google earth). Even though on the other hand the admin folks were pointing to not sending Blinken to show they are taking this seriously. As for the Pentagon, we have always seen leaks from the Pentagon no matter who is president. Sometimes against the administration (hence likely someone that sides with the other party) and sometimes leaks that may have been directed by the administration (hence likely someone that sides with the party in power). So yes, i'm sure there are a few democrats that might leak something, just as i'm sure there are a few republicans that would do the same.
