  1. I'm iffy on the fillibuster and definitely don't want stacking of the court. Biden, more than anyone knows about slow incremental change though, which is why his presidency has been even more infuriating to me. Whip up the party to put a bill up that will codify limited abortion rights that will get Manchin on board (shows unity) and gets likely the minimum GOP votes, Murkowski and Collins. Even if it doesn't pass, you're showing folks what they will get if they continue to vote for you. This would be critical for your purple states.
  2. I was gung ho that I was going to go to this until over the course of the last few months the Drew and Mike Podcast has been tracking Vince's path to this tour and it's just been abysmal. The scary thing is, he's much improved from a year ago.
  3. I'm assuming my recollection is coming from Gary Graff, but IIRC, Henley was big on pushing for the tiniest edits if it was lyrics he was not involved with in order to get named as one of the songwriters.
  4. You guys got me, I've been doing it wrong all along. From now on, should my kids get into an argument, I will do a full investigation to figure out who is 51% or greater wrong in that situation and punish the offender. Additionally, I will do nothing but praise the other. You hit your brother but he definitely started it and egged you on, not only is he punished, how about we go get ice cream!
  5. I agree with Edman that i'm more worried about right wing extremists currently, but you just pointed out about a situation where even if 100% of the blame on that building was a boogaloo boi, we're talking what 1 million dollars in damage, rough estimates for the Floyd protests were around 2 billion nationally. Just as the GOP is wrong to try and deflect criticism about 1/6, probably not right to deflect criticism about the Floyd riots.
  6. Certainly wasn't giving Carlson any benefit of the doubt. In fact I wasn't even talking about benefit of the doubt, just mentioning if one side is adamant X should be done, it seems the other side questions why is X being proposed, not the merits of X, not possible con's with alternate solutions, just that obviously the other side wants to do it in order to get to some "bad" Y outcome.
  7. In my theme of "one man's tyrant is another man's savior", both sides believe the other side does this, when it suits their beliefs. Additionally the other side is doing it because of bad intentions. Oil prices are crazy high, the GOP says 'Drill baby drill!', the other side points out every other possible reason why drilling more oil won't solve everything. In reality, gun restrictions and drilling aren't going to solve everything for their issues, but they would help. It seems since one side touts it as the saving grace the other side just instinctively fights it, regardless of the merits.
  8. Ironically, the people who always chant about "social conditions" when black people are involved are now the first people to bring up "personal responsibility" when white kids are doing it. To note, absolutely no excuse to do what predominantly well off white males are doing. That said, if guns were the ONLY issue, why aren't poor white males, well off black males, poor black males, well off white females, well off black females, poor black females, adjective <gender> <race>, doing it? I'm not saying Carlson is right with his reasonings, but it's certainly not one lone thing (guns) that is the sole reason otherwise we'd see this issue across all genders/races/communities. I will admit that it's not as simple as these large scale mass shootings, as there are definitely mass shootings (based on the exact definition) in minority communities as well, but the intention is not the same. Some gun reform may be a great tool against both, but the reason for them is absolutely quite different.
  9. She obviously didn't properly apply the law that has been on the books for 46 years though. Government is a system of checks and balances. I had a canvasser for some MAGA crazy a month back who said if elected, the person she was touting would impeach Whitmer on day 1. I asked for what. She pointed the above out, which it should be obvious that I felt Whitmer overstepped. But as I told her, MI Supreme Court checked her and solidified the law and the legislature went back to repeal a law that future gov's might be able to exploit, democrats and republicans alike. The system worked. If Whitmer tried to bypass the court, than I'd be all for impeachment. That said, you, and i'm sure most on this board would fight tooth and nail to say Whitmer was perfect in everything related to Covid and the GOP killed everyone that died from it. OK, maybe you would only say she was amazingly awesome but not perfect. Guess my point is one persons tyrant is another persons savior. In terms of a true tyrant, I personally think Trump stands alone on a podium. That said, he's definitely brought some crazies up like Greene, Gaetz, Boebert. I really despise folks like McConnell, Graham, and DeSantis that went along with the lie, but behind the scenes, i'd bet my left nut that they feel he is a disgrace to the country and are plotting for a GOP without him, whereas I doubt that's the case for the first ones I mentioned.
  10. You are correct, she only acted like a Tyrant with one of the laws. To go a bit further and make a case against me, after that happened, she simply did nothing, nada, zilch, throwing her hands in the air and blaming the other side. This is why, if she was running against Trump, I would vote for her, as I'd prefer someone that chooses not to lead at all, rather than one that tries to lead by any means necessary and continues to act like a Tyrant. This is also why I will reluctantly vote for Biden as well.
  11. https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2020/10/12/gretchen-whitmer-emergency-orders-struck-down/5970811002/ https://www.foley.com/en/insights/publications/2020/10/michigan-supreme-court-limits-powers-governor Later the legislature went and repealed the 1945 law, leaving us with at least the now more defined 1975 law. Judging how inept Nessell has been as her AG, i'm willing to agree that Whitmer didn't have the intention of being a tyrant, but for the folks that were out of work due to her unlawful orders and weren't getting any unemployment because she couldn't properly administer that division, I understand why some may think differently. Just as I understand those that question DeSantis as he chose to try and thread the needle of being a standout within the GOP, without going against Trump.
  12. This could be said of anyone you disagree with politically. In fact the Michigan supreme court voted that Whitmer overstepped her powers. She won't speak to local journalists unless they agree to ask her questions in advance as well. I honestly don't know enough about him outside the fact that when I see horrible things attributed to him, I often learn later that are exaggerated, but are there politicians that aren't elevated on the narcissist scale?
  13. I just don't see how anyone can watch DeSantis and really think he's equivalent to Trump. Does he have political views 1/2 the country doesn't like, absolutely, but seriously I don't see any Trump like qualities in his personality.
  14. I can't believe there is a debate on if DeSantis or Trump would be worse for this country. The argument that DeSantis is a smarter Trump thus worse for the country, in the words of Biden, "C'mon man". With Trump, you get a 100% chance that he will try to find a way to stay in power or ensure Eric or Ivanka take over, legally be damned. He wasn't close to doing it last time, no matter how bad we all agree 1/6 was, but we're still just learning how close he was at breaking with the 'adults in the room' leading up to 1/6. I doubt he makes the mistake of allowing any adults in the room next time.
  15. We'd be much better off with DeSantis than we were with Trump. He is much smarter than Trump though, and has shown a willingness to follow the crazies if it helps him. So don't take that first statement as an endorsement.
  16. He's an oddball. When he was on the council, he loved to say 'no' to everything. Additionally he demanded the mayor to be more transparent with everything. Probably the only thing he would have said yes to was transparent bathroom stalls that the mayor could use. As Mayor, anyone that questions him is just trying to make a name for themselves or trying to steal from the city. He does work a ton, responded to me over the weekend to a small complaint I had which I assumed my email would just hit a secretary in his office. But he definitely feels no one else can do what he can do and therefore he shouldn't be questioned.
  17. He is a democrat and has voiced support for more progressive candidates, like Bernie Sanders. I regrettably voted for him once as well.
  18. To satisfy Pfife, I think you could argue that Detroiters in 2016 were coming off seeing a republican Governor that actually was working with the city to try and help it out (got them through bankruptcy for example). As 1984 mentioned above about republicans, they are going to vote republican. Same thing with Dems, so while percentage wise, those that voted for Hillary, there might be an argument that many stayed home because they weren't that mad at the GOP because of Snyder. Goes towards my previous point as well, if Dems actually tried to talk/address issues seen in Rural areas, maybe they don't pick up a ton of votes, but they may also lower the amount of people that are intent on voting against them. Much easier to point to Wyoming as an example of everything that is wrong with voting in this country and why the GOP 'steals' national elections occasionally.
  19. Oh trust me, i'm not blaming everyone else. I certainly admit that I was not an 'abortion' voter as even though I disagreed with the republican platform and even leaned towards the 'bad law' complaint for RvW. I simply never thought it would be overturned. Similar to the social platform of the GOP. I didn't like it, but I felt society as a whole was moving in the right direction and would overrun the religious component of the GOP. Now, I can't vote based on what I think are the best policies for the issues that I feel are most important to how we run our government. I'll still give local republicans a chance if I see they are doing good work (probably just Miller), but i'm straight ticket dem at this point on bigger races. I just wished the dem party focused on real solutions instead of complaining about how bad the other party is. I mean, RvW wouldn't be this big of an issue if they would have just codified it, which even Manchin showed support for.
  20. No, it's not fair to try and play the game the way it was designed. The much better political play is not to do anything about it, except complain.
  21. I really wonder if this part of her testimony was a ploy to try and lure some additional testimony. Hutchinson's testimony can be truthful (that's what she heard) while the situation itself never happened, or at least to that level. If true, I feel like the Trumpers took the bait. Trump will push to have anyone that he feels can negate that comment and push them to testify, at that point, it's a free for all.
  22. I missed the first hour, watching some of that now, but this one is quite damning. And as mentioned above, while not as sexy, the obstruction comments at the end of the hearing might be the biggest news of all.
  23. Yes, Nessel.
  24. He should run as a republican.
  25. https://www.mediaite.com/tv/jim-obergefell-justice-thomas-should-remember-the-right-to-interracial-marriage-is-only-6-years-older-than-roe/ Because hypocrisy always exists, this is my guess of what happens over the next 18 months with SCOTUS. Someone brings this interracial case up. This time though, instead of using the same argument, Thomas votes against it. Roberts, still pissed, gives no legal reasoning and just votes to overturn it. Thomas and his wife are no longer married, the Justice department forces them to testify against each other in a case that further implicates Trump. Thomas resigns and Biden gets a SCOTUS pick. Roberts pushes to hear cases that bring both abortion and interracial marriage up again and they revert both decisions. I'm like 80-85% certain that's what is going to happen.
