1) its an issue in rugby too. there are all sorts of articles about it in the uk. not as much as here, but its out there. 2) the rules in rugby are different and you dont have the same amount of head to head contact you have in american football. you have scrums, but that contact is mostly shoulder to shoulder (hence the cauliflower ear). you cant hit anyone when theyre in the air. you cant tackle up high. the rules are designed for form tackling. the concussions you see in rubgy are more knees hitting heads. but they still happen quite a bit. 3) you dont have a piece of hard plastic on your head that makes you into a missile. you dont have the line of scrimmage where you have 350 pound men two feet from each other crashing right into each other 100 times a game. and you dont have downfield passing with vulnerable receivers. as i said, in rugby you cannot hit anyone if their feet are off the ground. 4) its even an issue in soccer with heading the ball and so many times and people smacking their heads together when they both try to head the same ball. this is 2022. there is a contingent of society that feels we all must be protected from harm at all times, and that anything that might harm you must be eliminated. as far as im concerned, head injuries are a risk to playing football and rugby amd soccer. nobody makes you play. if you dont want the risk, then dont play. like most things, its a balancing act. reasonable efforts should be made to make the game safer for the participants while not taking away the attractiveness of the game to the spectators.

me too. if he wants to be on the team, he'll be on the team. -
AD is going to hustle on the perimeter? lol. in what world? the first time he tries to change direction he'll pull a muscle and be out for a month.
-
i thought he'd be a good fit at michigan or notre dame, but i dont think harbaugh is leaving any time soon and notre dame made their bed with freeman. although the way notre dame is recruiting and michigan isnt, those situations might change in the near future...

in fairness to miami, the dolphins have looked like one of the best teams in the league since they fired flores. i dont know what happened with tua last week but the optics are certainly bad and the twitterati will be out with their pitchforks.

i hope we get another "miggys in the best shape of his career" article from mccoskey next year. -
through two games, i'd say zadina, kubalik, berggren, and soderblum have been impressive. the young defensemen really havent. mcissac, johannson, and edvinsson.
-
edvinsson has also taken multiple penalties. if he makes the team its because he passes the puck well or they want him here to be around pros. i havent seen anything that makes me think he's nhl ready. not yet. still plenty of time.
-
i havent been impressed with edvinsson. kocharski for the hawks has been much more impressive. faster and more active offensively. edvinsson has turned it over a ton.

how old is too old for tommy john surgery? -
if youre an nhl fan, you really should have espn+. its great for the nhl (and soccer). as someone who used to wake up at 530 am and trudge to the bar to watch united play, its great that you can see almost every soccer game now. the downside is that theyre all on different streaming services. paramount + for italy, argentina, brazil, and the champions league/europa league peacock for english premier league espn+ for spain, dutch, german, belgian, english championship unfortunately for me, my french league is captured by BeIn sports and that's the one im not paying for (stupid qataris). at least with the others my wife watches shows on those two which makes it easier to pay for. except espn+ which is almost a must as a sports fan now. btw, if you have a hulu subscription you can watch espn+ on it.

geno smith has been better than russell wilson so far...lol at denver.

elmer getting an early promotion! he didnt look out of place against pittsburgh, just a little slow. btw, i wouldnt take a ton away from that pitt game. the penguins had the puck for a lot of the game but just couldnt find the net. the wings played a lot of smash and grab hockey and, for a lot of the game, had a lot of trouble simply exiting their own zone, not to mention getting into pitt's zone and maintaining possession. the pens had 9 power plays! tonights game should be different with the hawks sending the b team. although part of me thinks the b teams have a decent shot because they'll be trying to impress and trying hard while the a teams dont care because its a preseason game. something to think about. looking forward to edvinsson tonight. i want to see less casual puck play and less turnovers. more of a sense of urgency. i would also like to see him man the point on the power play. similarly, lets see if soderblum can be a top pp holmstrom type? id like to see more of soderblum on the pk too. i know he doesnt skate the best, but he has such a long reach and really good hands, he could pose some issues if he's up top using his length.

Week Three: Detroit Lions (1-1) @ Minnesota Vikings (1-1)
buddha replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
the game makes me sad that we lost, but i also think we're overreatcing just a bit. we lost a close game on the road where we were a td underdog. the vikings are not a bad team and the lions hung with them and should have won. and it wasnt a game they were behind all day and made a late push to make it close either, they were the better team for much of the day. that's progress. otoh, it should the warts on the team. they still dont have a significant pass rush other than bringing blitzes. the linebackers are still poor. they struggled to stop the run at times. they lost yet another important player to a season ending injury. the team is still young and growing. there are lots of teams that lost heartbreakers the last couple weeks, not just the lions. next week is pretty important. -
