the recruiting issues are 90% nil and 10% staff changeover. if um doesnt get off its ass on nil, its fucked. were already seeing the results. honestly, they made a wakeup call like this to get over the stick up their ass about rules. the big ten wont get rid of anyone. they will add, add, and add some more. they'll get to 20-24 and so will the sec. those conferences will strike a deal with the others to give them some cash they can disperse. some will drop football altogether, some will continue to compete at a lower level.

it would take bertuzzi, #8, and maybe zadina or hronek. i think. would you rather keep bert and have a young player on an elc who MIGHT be the next raymond but COULD ALSO be the next zadina? like you, i'm more worried about his attitude issues and how much they'd have to pay him in two years. i'd pass because the price will likely be more than i want to pay plus the aforementioned attitude issues.

according to the most readily available metric (dom's gvsa value), a fair trade would be bertuzzi plus our first and second this year to get to #2. it would cost even more to get to #1.

we have a lot of cap space, i dont want to use it by overpaying role players like portis or bagley. if they do sign guys like that, make it short term deals so you can get out of it quickly, or deal them at the deadline.

chas said it was a "failed signing." i just pointed out that it was a "failed trade" instead of "signing." we gave up nothing to get nothing so is that a "fail"? BUT, as was pointed out by others, we could have gotten something else so maybe it was? barnhart was supposed to be a defense first catcher. i thought it was nothing special at the time and its proven to be nothing special. you can find defense first non-hitting catchers anytime you want. if youre going to deal assets, you might as well get something of value back. barnhart aint much value.
