  1. FWIW, I would not want a 10 year contract or any similar time frame, and I also doubt that he will get that length....but I freely admit that I could be dead wrong about that. I hope its something more like 5 - 7 years.
  2. On the bright side we didnt have to give up much to get him. And the other guys we got are gonna be awesome. Daz will be the next Denard Span, dummies.
  3. Are people assuming that Correa will likely not come here because Detroit is viewed as a bad team or because we assume that Chris will not endorse $$ or both?
  4. Ivey looks good with the ball. Cade's shot is still a brick.
  5. It is certainly reasonable to say that the Tigers (or any team) need to rely on at least 2 minor leaguers a year to join the club and be a solid contributor/starter. But the Tigers haven't had anything like this nominal track record, unfortunately. No disrespect to Keith Colt or anybody else but I would like to see MLB level production before we anoint anyone as the next good starting ____.
  6. If they can repeat the Wilson for Candy trade and get a starting player then sure. That was quite a steal though.
  7. He seemed to be able to do something that nobody else on the team could do -- hit for power....I realize that he was quite old, but had very limited mileage on his body....really don't understand why he wasn't given more of a shot to play in 2021/22.
  8. I believe with Jeimer you could get him at a lower-than-arb $$ if you released him and let him explore the FA market, then see if he would come back for less, right? There is no way that they should wind up paying him $7M. He might bounce back, I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of bounce-back, but I wouldn't want to see them pay him based on that assumption. Yeah, you have to bring back Jiminez. The guy is a legitimate plus reliever, maybe their best depending on whether Chaifin is back and pitching normally, and the BP is the one thing they have going for them. I'd like to see Meadows get another shot at it if he's up to it. The rest are all up in the air. If they can find value from any of them, fine, but I would hope that none of them are important pieces for the team again.
  9. Absolutely, you should get what you pay for as a team, at least in the aggregate. What I'm talking about is the sequencing. I don't believe sequencing D/D then winning then trade/FA is the best or even a helpful approach. It is argued by some that you should not trade for or otherwise acquire players with significant $$ contracts until **after** you have built a winner through the draft and development. But no team that has been successful over time has done it this way. You would be tempted to say the Rays and A's do it this way, but they don't ever sequence in any $$. Every owner and GM would love to do what the Rays and A's do, but only these two teams have been able to win at least somewhat consistently with a low payroll -- and even the A's have only won in 7 out of their last 16 seasons. Putting aside LA and NYY, since they are mega market teams, there are a handful of other fairly consistently successful teams like HOU, STL, and ATL, who have used D/D, trades and FAs as tools to build a winner, and maintain a pretty consistent level of payroll investment over time. The Royals are the closest example of the all-D/D approach, and in my opinion, it cost them several winning seasons, and did not build a sustainable model. Instead, KC used a one-in-a-generation D/D core to win 3 seasons, then when core aged out and/or moved on, their ongoing D/D production slowed to a more normal pace, and their very low investment in trades and FA caught up to them. More to the point, the sequenced "wait to spend" approach wasted 2011 and 2012 for KC, which could have easily have been winning/playoff seasons if they had acquired a normal amount of good trade/FA players. When KC did invest in a handful of good FA/trade products, they complimented the very good core to build a winner in 2013/2014/2015. When KC experienced a more normal level of D/D production after 2016, their low level of trade and FA acquisitions/production proved to be their undoing. To maximize the opportunity to win and make the playoffs on a fairly consistent basis, even teams who anticipate a once-in-a-generation D/D core **should** consistently spend something in the range of an average payroll; if a very strong D/D core "arrives", then a consistently decent team (in the 80 wins +/- 5 wins range) can become a great team for a few years.
  10. Yes. The loss of production at a key slot notwithstanding, I really don't think that they can afford to send the message with a new regime that .250/.300/.320 is worthy of a middle-order DH slot, not even out of respect for a HoFer, not after the 2022 no-O debacle.
  11. Their errors in calling and executing several key plays led to one TD for them and took two FG off the boards potentially for us, and also Goffs Goal line INT. The score could have been 22-14 (two FG and a TD+2pt for the Lions) in the final quarter rather than a hopeless blowout. These errors were not random in any way, they came directly from the head coach and from Goff, By virtue of a snowball effect of questionable decision-making on DCs part about 4th downs that has snowballed into a kind of death loop, and now Goff forced a couple of key plays with catastrophic results. They lost to a below average team in New England that played disciplined football and didn't make overly risky decisions. If the problem is that we can't get anyone to kick a field goal, that would be a super crappy reflection on Holmes. DC needs to get heavily into QC about making decisions in the game. He should be sticking with the odds in every situation and 3 situation and not gambling the farm on every 4th down.
  12. Agreed...DC seems to be hung up on 4th down decisions. He needs to listen to his QC people about go/no-go decisions (I hope they have that info in hand!)
  13. I would be happy with this. I mean look they would be stupid to treat Miguel with disrespect and hes earned HoF respect. I'd like the Tigers to start acting more like the Cardinals, in that even with the HoF legends, it is about production and winning, and if you're not producing and winning you're not gonna play. I get the Cardinals are in that position because they've earned it and because they were a playoff caliber team when Pujols rejoined them. Obviously the Tigers havent earned that kind of respect. However, Harris as the new GM needs to develop the kind of relationship with Miggy and start building higher (and still realistic) expectations for improved on field performance for the organization, so that everybody, even Miggy, will be willing to do what Harris feels is best for the team. The above may seem pie in the sky to some, but if Miggy is not willing to meet Harris on Harris's terms, then Miggy's approach could be detrimental to the new organizational philosophy, even if its just for one year.
  14. yes Yes YES I understand that fan expectations probably don't mean anything, but I am sick and tired of hearing fans for 7 years around here use the logic: - since we're going to be bad we might as well keep Miggy, or - we should be curtailing spending unless it will guarantee a ring or the playoffs (when no successful franchise does this). It just feels to me that even after 7 years of brutal losing with very little improvement, the "I'm a fan and I want to see a winner" perspective seems to get shorted in deference to what some people seem to believe that Charlie Comisky would want to hear from one of his employees.
  15. After the offensive production in games 1 - 4 I expected them to get the defense more or less to where it was today and to at least be hanging around .500 with higher scoring games. I did not anticipate what happened today. The thought entered my mind of course, anything can happen in one game, but this just blows my doors off to see us get humiliated like this.
  16. I'm not writing him off, but he clearly needs to have a much better set of players and/or scheme around him for him to achieve visible production.
  17. Not one single phase of their game worked well today. The best you can say is that the defense wasn't the worst in NFL history again like it was last week....just really bad. They have had an epic amount of injuries. But they fought through injuries to play decently or even well in certain phases earlier this year. At least they didn't play Oruwariye (or however you spell it). But dammit they got torched defensively by a third-string QB and another mediocre running back. And now they can't seem to keep *anybody* healthy for more than a quarter of a game. And Hutchinson looks like he's heading for a personal lost rookie season on a D-Line that is NFL-worst, along with the invisible McNeil and Brockers and others that Holmes targeted.....they all have been completely crappy. Maybe Cominsky can help turn things around? A waiver pickup is our hope now? Gads. And a K position that is the worst in Lion's memory. The 1st overall pick isn't going to turn things around for this team, sorry folks. Prior to the Seattle debacle, it was looking like an organization on the rise that just needed some breaks. Two absolutely horrifying games later and the wheels look like they are coming off. After the buy week the real competition starts. Feels like they are going to need a freaking miracle to get this on track again. This is one of my real low points as a Lions fan since the 1970s....that is saying a whole lot.
  18. Why the heck didnt we sign and keep Prater? We have left a lot of points on the table and DC is now going for it on 4th and 9 from the 34 in the 1st half with a 1st start rookie QB for the Patriots. They absolutely should have kicked the FG against the Vikings but their previous lousy K couldnt get the job done. I realize that 50+ yarders are not sure things but this is ridiculous. Holmes has blown it by not keeping the right K, and DC is turning into a laughingstock on 4th down calls in the opps 35 yard area as a result.
