I don't know that being brought up quickly hurt Torkelson's psyche. Maybe he is just not that good or maybe he is too stubborn. I also have no idea whether the current front office has a better handle on how players will react to failure. They seem to be more scientific, but I don't know if they have expertise in how individuals will react to adversity. That's a difficult thing to gauge.

If you want to see someone get wrapped up in their feelings, just ask a right winger a question about guns, the American flag or the Bible.

In hindsight, I wish they had kept both and not extended Cabrera. Win or lose as a team. I think most fans would have loved to have followed Verlander through his legendary career. As for Martinez, they basically just gave him away. His market may not have been good at the time because teams were not looking for that type of hitter, but he definitely had baseball value as a hitter.

I know you have repeatedly said that Torkelson was the right pick, but you also seem to be blaming Torkelson's failure om Avila, so it's a bit confusing.

I know this is a joke, but I don't think that Leyland would have wanted anything to do with tobacco advertising. It's a choice he made for himself, but I think he is an honorable person who would not have wanted to promote tobacco to young people.

It's more a response to Buddah, but you have said that Avila was incompetent.

Replacing him with someone who communicates better might have helped a little and very small percents are all we need to potentially change an election result. I have been told that the system makes it really difficult to get different candidates even if they are bad ones, so I'm not suggesting it would have been easy or even practical.

The way that the Torkelson pick can be spun as an incompetent move. Hindsight.

He is a good GM, but the pattern is familiar - one of the highest payrolls in MLB and no dominant closer. The next step will be to gut the farm system. He does have great teams everywhere he goes though. He does what he is hired to do even if it might hurt after he leaves.

I don't usually pay much attention to the third wild card until late in the season, because it's kind of lame...but the Tigers are only one game out of the playoffs.

Some of those players will fail and that will be Avila's fault. Some will succeed. That will be because of Harris. 😃

Ted Williams also had a better year than DiMaggio, but DiMaggio won the MVP. Williams batted .406 in 1941 and won the Triple Crown in 1942 and didn't get the MVP either year.

I don't blame either one or they can share the blame for not develping him. Harris's job now is to figure how much time to give him and then find a replacement if Tork can't figure it out. Neither one of those decisuons would involve Avila.

As you have said before, who else should they have picked that year? Are you blaming Avila for choosing a consensus #1.
