  1. It's either Williams or Ruth. Williams edges him statistically, but it's hard for me to get away from the idea that Ruth completely transformed the game. Ruth is number one overall because he was also a very good pitcher.
  2. Williams might be the number one hitter ever. He didn't do anything beyond that which is why I put him behind Ruth, Bonds, Cobb, Mays.
  3. Ruth, Bonds, Mays, Cobb...Maybe Aaron instead of Williams. Not sure. Wagner needs to be considered too.
  4. Yes, I always give players credit for their war years and Greenberg had a lot of them. I think they are pretty close, but I believe Greenberg has the edge. I don't have a cut off for "elite". The point is there are a significant number of hitters who are far enough ahead of him to be considered a different tier. Up until age 33, he was on a Hank Aaron/ Frank Robinson career path. Had he stayed on that path, I would have considered him elite.
  5. It's been a good month, but it will probably drop more before it stabilizes
  6. Unless Eduardo Rodriguez can convince him that the non-baseball life is a good one!
  7. I don't have an exact number, but there are too many players ahead of him for me to consider him elite. Just based on hitting, he may be top 50 all-time but not top 25 and he doesn't add a lot of value beyond hitting. Just looking at Tigers players, he is probably 5th behind Cobb, Kaline, Gehringer and Greenberg. He does not compare to Cobb who is elite by any standard. He falls maybe half way between Kaline (semi-elite) and Whitaker/Trammell (not elite).
  8. His legacy as a great Hall of Famer won't change because of one really crappy year at the end. That happens to a lot of Hall of Famers. I think his legacy has already been tarnished somewhat by his several seasons of mediocrity. He has gone from being a Frank Robinson - Hank Aaron level legend to a great but not elite Hall of Famer. There is no shame in that but it would have been nice to see the former. Pujols is kind of the same way except I think he is still in the elite tier just because the first half of his career was so amazing.
  9. Sign Rick Porcello. He's only 33!
  10. He is listed at 5-9 154 pounds and is probably shorter than that, so Trump will do something with that.
  11. It's not accurate to only say 162 days. They work seven days a week and there is also Spring Training and training during the off-season. It's a lot of money though.
  12. Pujols was better. Trout had a higher OPS+ the first 12 years (176 to 168). Pujols was more durable (91.5 WAR to 79.9 WAR) and that is important. Cabrera lagged behind: 154 OPS+ and 59.8 WAR. Those are awesome numbers, but not quite the same class as the others.
  13. I think it should be difficult to get gun permits of any kind, so that's a good thing.
  14. Another question I have about concealed carry without a permit is why was this kid (or people like him) not able to get or not willing to pursue a permit?
  15. He probably did. However, the question is will the sum total of lives saved by people carring guns exceed the total of lives ended by people carrying guns?
  16. Countries with strict gun laws have lower gun homicide rates. States with strict gun laws have lower gun homicide rates. So, yes I think it's very possible that barriers to entry can work.
  17. Soto makes no sense for the Tigers. They would get him for two years and then he'll leave. The only teams that should consider trading for him are teams that are either one hitter away from post-season or willing to break the bank on an insane extension. The Tigers are not in either category.
  18. Comes back from what? He got hot for a few weeks three years ago. He's a still a prospect, but I don't see him as anything special at this point.
  19. Texas sounds like a shithole.
  20. He obviously reads this board. My negativity lit a fire under him.
  21. I think the trade was supposed to Michael Drumright and Roberto Duran for Bernie Williams. Randy Smith insisted an agreement was in place and that the Yankees reneged. I think Smith was high. If it was another team besides the Yankees, I could believe that they were trying to dump Williams' salary, but trading Williams in his prime for prospects was not the Yankees way.
  22. They are fun as a novelty. I don't think baseball needs to learn from them.
  23. I'd be happy if they got just one Page.
