Merril is another, had 889 PAs, and he ended his year 20 season in AA with a .782 OPS in 211 PAs. He then made the opening day roster, skipping AAA entirely, and proceed to have a 126 OPS+ and a 4.4 WAR as a 21 year old. Juan Soto had 512 PAs, only 35 of which were in AA before he was called up and posted a 16% BB% and a 146 wRC+ in 494 PAs as a freaking 19 year old. Just looking at total games played in AAA before their first call ups: Vlad 39, Witt 63, Carrol 33, Greene 55, Trout 0, Mayer 43, Holliday 10. What's more relevant is how much time they spend at the upper level of the minors, once somebody shows they are too good at AAA, they are called up fast. There is no expectation that McGonigle will take until August of next year to be called up. He will absolutely have a shot to earn his was onto the opening roster in Spring Training, and if not, don't expect more than 50-60 games in AAA if he performs how he's projected to.

You do realize even if you use their minor+college PAs (750 for Neto, 832 for Langford) they will be in the same range as McGonigle, who will be over 800+ PAs by the end of the season. Now it's apples to apples and the point is proven the exact same. Jackson was called up and struggled, so he was sent back down to get those PAs. He has 726 when he was first called up, which is all that's relevant to this discussion.

Wyatt Langford 222 PAs. Zach Neto 275 PAs. Jackson Holliday 726 PAs before his first call up. They may like to give a player a certain amount of PAs, but it is asinine to suggest they will leave a player in the minors if they think he is good enough to hit big league pitching because he hasn't gotten a certain amount of PAs in the minors. In an ideal world they would have him get that many PAs, but McGonigle has missed a lot of time with injuries, so he's just not gonna get them. No front office would be so incompetent to watch him not be challenged in AAA and think gee, he missed out on 400 PAs in A ball, so we can't call him up.
-
No lol. That does not apply to prospects of McGonigles caliber.
-
Could he not field a routine grounder or throw to 1B? Cause his bat doesn't need more time.

https://archive.ph/cTFiF Some statcast data for Clark and McGonigle. They're both really good.

The apology got me. -
He does it every AB, and most anytime they show him on camera for more than five seconds. Wide eye, raised eyebrows. This is one of those things where you're not gonna believe you didn't it notice it before with how often he does it.

The difference in how long it takes to tell when a player is too good for a minor league level is not that much longer between pitchers and hitters. It has taken a total of 23 games for it to be obvious that McGonigle is too good for AA and will not be challenged at that level. Sometimes it's just that obvious. -

Detroit this year, no. Although promoting him to AAA for September and then breaking camp with the team is a very real possibility. Somebody mentioned the rookie pick incentive, that is something that will only speed up his timeline, not slow it down. -

Jobe had a total of 79.2 IP in AA before being promoted to AAA, and a total of 9 IP in AAA before the Tigers brought him up to pitch in the playoffs. Any suggestion they plan on having McGonigle spending any amount of significant time in AAA is way off base. -

McGonigle was promoted to AA after a grand total of 14 games in A+ last year and 36 this year. He played 12 games in A ball and then 60 the next season before being promoted to A+. He will start next year in AAA. And if he performs how he will be expected and projected to at AAA, it won't take more than 50-60 games until he forces the Tigers hand to call him up. Anybody who thinks Tigers are planning to have him spend the majority of season in AAA, let alone mention AA lol, is kidding themselves. Nothing Harris has said or done should be interpreted to suggest the Tigers think McGonigle needs a lot of seasoning or reps at any level where he proves he's too good. -
Threw me for a loop when the Tigers played there to open the season.

You can watch the games for free if you want.

I learned about dependent and independent variables in middle school science. I guess a lot of people missed out on that lesson.

I'm shocked to hear Twitter is full of dumb comments.
-
There is a much bigger sample size which shows he's worse in the 9th than the 7th and 8th.
-
I also had the wrong stats where it was sorted by primary position of 3rd base and not actual production at 3rd base. It's actually 17th in WAR and 24th in wRC+ as a 3B. Luckily for us I heard somewhere that that is backwards looking and past performance is not indicative of future results.
-
Tigers are 8th in WAR at 3B and 10th in wRC+.

You mean a package based around Tyler Mattison wouldn't have gotten it done?
-
Tried to tell people that when they thought a package based around garbage would get it done.
-
Fundamental misunderstanding of how odds work.
-
Do you think any pitching additions will result in our pitching staff giving up one full run a game less over the course of a season?

The booms and busts have been so extreme this year.
