Daniel Penny found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jordan Neely. This verdict is exactly right, and anyone who has ridden public transportation in NYC or elsewhere can totally understand what it feels like when someone who is exhibiting threatening behavior is on your subway car… and there’s nowhere to go. The prosecution charging him with criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter was such a huge overreach.

My father’s last year was in a VA home - he received great care. The staff was wonderful…. And it was affordable. Also, only about 15 minutes from me, so I was able to be with him often. I don’t know what/where all the vets that are in these facilities will be able to go if they are shut down. My heart aches just thinking about that

But here’s the thing, Lee, …if you’re in an African-American neighborhood, and you hanging nooses from a tree, and chanting some ugly, ugly things, are the people in that neighborhood not right if they’re feeling threatened? If groups of people are carrying torches through a Hebrew section of a city, chanting “Jews will not replace us“, are those people not right to feel threatened? Setting up gallows, while you’re chanting, “hang Mike Pence”, while you’re yelling, “where is Nancy Pelosi”, …this is absolutely threatening behavior. Dismissing it as “nothing but show” is really diminishing how bloody awful that display is/was.

I’m not sure why you’re being so confrontational. I was agreeing with much of what you said… but the conversation here has been with some who pretty clearly WERE equating the two. And, btw, I taught for a few years also, so I most definitely know everything you listed in your second paragraph.

Screwball, every woman has that concern, regardless if there are ex-cons or felons. It’s oftentimes the cute guy next door that can be just as frightening. it’s any dark corridor. It’s any deserted parking lot or street. It’s an empty elevator or stairwell. All demand caution, but again, it’s in no way warranted to equate a trans person in a bathroom with a sexual predator in a bathroom. It’s just not.
