apparently it was the GOP Congresscritters who objected big time. He has never started in 6 yrs in the majors. He was a starter in the minors though AAA in 2019 but didn't have a particularly good ERA in that role. We had a thread here a while back where we thrashed out how the cost of a college degree has increased wrt the ability of a student to pay for it while working. There is no doubt that the indexes have been skewed by the falling price of technology items, but he has a powerful point that while we do spend a lot on tech items and thus do receive value back from those purchases, they are not the 'essential' quality of life values of housing, health, food and education. Cost of living calcs give the economy a lot of credit for my 55" 4K flat screen replacing the 1950 12" RCA I recently posted a pic of, but what has that really done for my life except help drive me into more social isolation sitting in front of it? We've had washing machines for 100 years, they are suddenly miles more sophisticated than they used to be - in that sense they are more valuable, but are our clothes any cleaner for all that? The payoff to tech has been for business. Profitability there has soared due to tech driven increases in production efficiency, and that does have a legitimate value that needs to be captured somewhere, but it can't be the only thing we capture and right now officially it is. It's true everywhere, that we get what we measure. So as much as we moan and groan about the bureaucracy, having one that works right, that measures and produces the data that can drive better political debate, is still a critical thing for a democracy to survive.

It's a scale problem from multiple directions. If you look at the 15th/16th century voyages of exploration, they were relatively large robust projects - multiple ships full of supplies and survival tools, big crews, and they still often suffered terrible losses. These are tiny missions, tiny crews, no support equipment available or even possible - and to lose a crew would not only be tragic for the individuals but politically disastrous for the sponsoring industries/nation.

I watched Holl last season and thought he was a weak link. But so is Hamonic. If you asked me to pick I'd be hard pressed - if you think Holl is better than Hamonic you won't get a strong argument from me but OTOH I don't think the difference is enough that that choice is going to impact the team much. Neither is good enough IMO. I also think some of what is going on is that they are trying to take more advantage of Seider, Edvinsson (and eventually ASP's?)) offensive talents and they're having growing pains. We are seeing more Dmen leading rushes than since Ghost left and some Wing forwards are having a tough time playing 200 ft when they are being called on. And there is still some bad decision making by a Dman going when they should have stayed. Mac called out Edvinsson the other day for not realizing he was leaving DeBrincat to rotate back on a guy he couldn't possibly handle. Cat tried, but he was outmanned and it resulted in a goal. If they can all learn to rotate intelligently they will be a much better team for it so IMO it's something they have to suffer through. Getting more out of the big Dmen in the offensive zone is a payoff worth some pain.

Contracts are getting extreme, but the teams giving them away don't seem to be losing money yet - the teams that can't afford those contracts so far have been disciplined about not giving them away. The net result is that there probably are not enough teams under enough financial duress right now to make the owners dig in their heels about claw backs, which would be one thing that would drive to a strike. The other possibility is that the majority of owners gang up on NY/LA and demand the system be made more equitable - that would probably also set off the players because it would almost certainly involve some kind of cap - which they won't accept even if a more equitable $ distribution across the league would almost certainly be in the players' long term interest. But OTOH, the other owners have had a 100 yrs to do that and never have.
