So lets assume Torkelson is having a >5 WAR season and is ensconced at 1b. If Torres and Keith are splitting 2B and putting up the same numbers what is the advantage of keeping both even if you are in a playoff hunt? Maybe there is something else (like a reliever) you need more. Now of course since Keith and Torres are L/R pair, they wouldn't be the same player even if they are each producing at a similar rate on their side of the platoon - but Torres is not going to be a happy camper if he is playing for a fat contract and he ends up on the short side of a platoon because Colt is left handed and Torkelson is out producing him (remember this is all hypothetical!).
Yeah - I know - the good kind of problems for a team to have!
In the real world, I think Colt with straighten up, JHM will end up back at Toledo and Torkelson and Torres will both take some time at DH and Keith will rotate through all three spots - 1B, 2B, DH, IOW the orginal plan coming out of ST.
