  1. If there is a site these days that is going to cherry pick stats between Fangraphs, Baseball Reference, or the corpse of Sports Illustrated, I know which one I am going to be suspicious of.
  2. Existential sounding question... How do we know who is going to be a good reliever the next the next three months? There seems to be a lot of certainty in the ether for something that is inherently uncertain.
  3. Not necessarily...
  4. I think it was Keith Law who made the Hornsby comparison, not Longenhagen. He was mostly joking.
  5. Enns was a separate trade. Micah Ashman was traded for Morton and cash. Enns was traded for cash.
  6. I don't get the criticism here. Not counting Dobnak (that was a pure salary dump to balance the trade), the Tigers have added five pitchers to the mix. When your depth is ravaged*, that's a good thing. I much prefer that to putting all your eggs in one basket. And we are criticizing them for not giving up enough? I'm trying to figure that one out.
  7. What I like about Heuer and Sewald is they don't tie down a roster spot right now, but have upside. You can only carry 8 relievers, so bringing a couple guys in as options down the road is something you can afford to do when you have payroll flexibility and a large divisional lead.
  8. Seems to be the MO so far this week...
  9. Or the free spending owner dying and the kids being cheap, something we know all too much about. They had some oddly backloaded deals the last two years. So yeah, there is some chicken coming home to roost here, even if CBT is based on AAV. There are some cash flow issues they are working around.
  10. There are all sorts of shoulder strains.
  11. They don't have many if any rentals.
  12. Miller would have cost McGonigle plus then.
  13. Sewald is being slept on and who I was referring to. Montero I could take or leave, but the price was right.
  14. I like it. Build for October and get options in place. I still think something bigger is afoot.
  15. Owens DFA is interesting. Almost like they have him included in a trade. Because he is on the IL, he cannot be outrighted. So if they don't find a taker for him today, they have to release him if he clears waivers.
  16. "Controllable years" is a bit of a misnomer for a reliever. I remember saying this when the Cubs traded Scott Efross with "5 years of control." Relievers don't have a 10 year shelf life in most cases.
  17. For the "he will re-sign after clearing waivers" crowd, I feel like I need to explain Hartlieb. Because he has been outrighted before, he had the right to declare free agency upon his outright. I don't know the terms of the contract he opted out of, but he was likely on a minimum deal or close to it. Hernandez has the same right (greater than 3 yrs service), but he has a guaranteed 7 figure deal he would be opting out of. If he had 5 years he could refuse that assignment and effectively force his release to get paid. His DFA limbo ends tomorrow. I suspect if he clears waivers, he will accept the assignment.
  18. West coast PGA Championships in prime time because they aren't beholden to 60 minutes anymore? Sign me up!
  19. They have the NFL. They will be fine. That has fueled some pretty crappy prime time sitcom success for a quarter century now.
  20. Wapo ran an op-ed from Scott Bessent hawking crypto today and moderated my comment that it was a scam.
  21. Torkmoil probably lifted from the BA tracker and didn't cite it.
  22. There's some highlights, including a McGonigle double from the Moon Mammoths game at the end of Last Week Tonight this week.
  23. Here to say if PASS was nationally syndicated instead of WGN, Lou Whitaker would be in the Hall of Fame instead of Ryne Sandberg.
  24. Also. We let Alfredo Simon walk 10 years ago, so no way we have enough to go get him.
  25. Editorials that are well researched and well cited can be just as insightful as news stories, if not more. Having said that, if you go to an opinions page and see a lot of redundancy, it makes some sense to reorganize in a lot of ways.
