Regarding this point, Nevin gets dinged in part because of how he was acquired (Trade following DFA) and because he's been in the minors for longer (similar to how people were writing off Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez until recently)... I tend to agree with you, I don't think Harris trades for him following a DFA (even if he didn't give up a ton) if he didn't think he provided some value.

First bolded point is spot on: I don't think Kreidler should be in the big leagues right now.... especially coming off the hand injury last year, he seems like a guy who needs playing time and he's not going to get it to a large enough degree in Detroit to warrant him having a 26 man roster spot. Second bolded point cannot be emphasized enough.... after living through 2022, you would think people wouldn't necessarily look at depth players as "dime a dozen"

Again, that's how we feel.... that may not be how Harris feels. Nevin is also a young guy in his own right, similar age to Kreidler and, honestly, his hit tool is probably better.

Having said all that, maybe Lipcius just got a little more runway....

A couple of things: Harris did bring him in, which implies that he was fine with his skillset or that he would be worth taking a flyer on. And in terms of controlling the strike zone (ie. taking walks, K's, plate discipline), he falls into the realm of what Harris is talking about. I don't think Cesar is a lock, he still has to show that he can hit enough (hence his low OBPs), but he's a better fit for Harris than you are giving credit for imo. I probably agree more than I disagree, tbh.... I was kinda making the same argument for Parker Meadows in another thread recently (ie. why should one of Carpenter/Baddoo be a lock to make it if Meadows is outplaying them?). But what I want and what Harris/AJ want are two different things, and there are practical realities involved as well that differentiate from the outfield comparison; Tyler Nevin, for instance, doesn't have options left and I believe he'd have to be DFA'd if he doesn't make the opening day roster (and would be a decent risk to be claimed). Depending on the contract Cesar Hernandez signed, it could be a Trayce Thompson/Chase Anderson situation where he can declare free agency after a set period of time if he's not on the major league roster. Schoop may be a bounce back candidate and will be given opportunities to show that. Again, not saying what they should or shouldn't do IMO at this point, but just that they have a lot of things to consider in how to build this roster, and it's may be a little more complicated than "let's just stash Nevin or Hernandez away in AAA" when that may not be an option or may only be a temporary option.

I agree that Lipcius is making a real case, but in all likelihood, swap out him for Cesar Hernandez (and probably Carp for Baddoo) and that's likely where this is heading.

You're probably right as far as him starting at AAA. Just don't think it's as crazy as the insiders think for him to be in the conversation if his performance merits.

The other thing is that Meadows is, obstensibly, in competition with Baddoo and Carpenter for a spot (Vierling is a shoo-in because he's a righty and can play infield). McCosky's comment from yesterday (see below) seemed incredulous at the idea that Meadows would supplant either of them. My question is... why? I love what Baddoo did in 21 and that Carpenter gave them after his callup last year, but neither of them should just be gifted a spot, particularly if they have options (as both of them do). They both have flaws of their own in their game that Meadows has less of, particularly defensively. And neither have enough of a track record to be given the benefit of the doubt as well. I get the argument about Parker not having played about Double A yet, but that also shouldn't begin and end the discussion either. Merit through performance should matter as well.

100%, and that is a lesson that some of the supposed alternatives (ie. DeSantis) haven't learned either. That kinda behavior just doesn't have as much purchase beyond the hard core base. It's one thing when we are talking policy differences - there are legit differences between the two parties and sides in a variety of ways. Instead, this kinda stuff just says a lot about values. These are just truly terrible and broken individuals
