  1. From a plate discipline perspective, he has been more like the Mets version of Baez than the Cubs one. So at least there's that. Hope the hitting can be more consistent tho.
  2. Yeah, somehow I doubt this is why the deal is on hold.
  3. Barnhart is definitely fine enough... he got off to a slow start but has BABIPed his way to a better average. His game calling appears to be pretty darn good, and defensively is starting to be better. The talks about extension before the season (given what we have seen from him thus far) is pretty concerning though.... he's good enough for where they are at the moment, but longer term, they need to give Jake Rogers more runway when he gets healthy, as well as Dingler who, depending on how the season goes, could be in the majors some time next year. He is capable of being better than a mid 4's ERA, 1.3 WHIP guy IMO. But either way, the Zimmermann comparisons were always unfair and as much of a reflection on the lack of run support he was getting in some of these starts (the Minnesota start) or the bad defense behind him (LA Dodgers start) than the actual quality of pitching.
  4. I was being sarcastic with my comment, they shouldn't DFA him even if that was an option. My point was more that, while the bad rehab start plays into the already existing narrative about Mize, it's still just one rehab start. I doubt he would be the first MLer to struggle in a rehab outing. If it carries over into the next couple of rehab starts, where his velo is down and he's missing up with the fastball, there will be more reason to worry.
  5. Worth noting the only 2021 Rule 5 pick on the 26 man roster right now is the guy that Avila didn't protect and the Tigers were lucky was returned to them.
  6. Favorable pitching matchup, Jordan Lyles was a gas can for the last couple of years with the Rangers. But with this lineup.... he'll probably look like Jim Palmer lol
  7. Look at what Mark Attanasio's ownership has done for the Brewers... that's an org in a small market that had perennial attendance problems, and now it makes money hand over first. Get the right owner in place with a good management team in Detroit, with the already existing infrastructure and iconic branding that the team has and the loyalty of Michigan sports fans, and there's no doubt they'd make way more money than trying to compete for the attention of the techbros of Austin (most of whom are either Astros fans or Californians who are fans of the Dodgers/Giants)
  8. I assume you mean AJ? When you look at his career arc (his stops in AZ/SD), it's always been apparent that he aspires to be more than just a manager, and it has always appeared to be the case in Detroit. It's not specifically spelled out, but it's pretty clear that he appears to have helped with a lot of decisions behind the scenes with Al since he has taken over. And I suspect that, at some point, he may want to leave the dugout and go upstairs. I'd be cool with that happening here. In any event, the changes and his apparent larger role in the org is a good thing that should lead to better outcomes for the org going forward, but Avila is still functionally the GM at this point so everything that this organization does will be filtered through that lens.
  9. I have to keep repeating it, but they hired a bunch of new people in player development (out of successful orgs) and removed a lot of guys between last offseason and this one. No guarantees that things will be different, per se, but the composition of player development is different than it was in the past.
  10. They are carrying 14 pitchers right now, they need to cut back to 13 by the end of the month. IDK why they need Foley, who was just brought up.
  11. It's crazy how much his stock has fallen. Game 1 seems like a long time ago.
  12. You aren't missing anything. Detroit is an original 1901 AL franchise with an established brand that, while not as iconic as the Yanks or Sox or Dodgers, isn't far behind. It has a passionate, well-establisbed and loyal fanbase that has proven it will spend money on the team and it is located in a mid to upper mid range metro area population wise, and one with some wealth as well. If Pizza Jr coughed this franchise up, somebody else with a vision could make way more money with the franchise parked right where it is at 2100 Woodward. Moreso than they would make relocating it to Nashville or Charlotte or San Antonio
  13. I'm curious about Chris Meyers... anything there or is he more org depth? Can't really deny the numbers in Lakeland or WMI so far
  14. Vic Reyes now 2-2, sporting a .625 average... Is he rehabbed enough yet?
  15. Clearly this means they should DFA him
  16. Again, there are two questions here... the macro question, which is why is this ballclub still a projected 70-75 win ball club after year five of the rebuild. And on that score, Al Avila is terrible and deserved to be fired. And then there's the micro question of why a projected 70-75 win team has a lineup that is playing like a 50-55 win team. And on that score, as was the case last year, players have track records and it's reasonable to expect them to meet expectations. This whole debate kinda minimizes the contributions of the player to the success and failures of the team. And more than anything else, that's why they are where they are in the micro... not Al or AJ, the players.
  17. Before his last start in Houston, people were giving ERod way more crap than he deserved and subsequently blaming Al. In general, there's tons to complain about with Al's GM tenure, but the last free agent class isn't a legit one. He made a lot of logical signings that were recieved as such at the time
  18. The team underwent some organizational restructuring late last year, particularly relating to player development. The upshot being that AJ's fingerprints were likely all over that
  19. I am still not sure that all the player development hires after he was hired is a coincidence. Which, if that means AJ is more involved on that side of the house, is absolutely a good thing.
  20. Rare 1-2-3 inning for Joe Joe
  21. Just too much plate from Fulmer....
