One of Donald "Man of the People" Trump's supporters on... *checks notes* Barry Weiss' podcast talking about... *checks notes* how terrible it is that people don't just drop at their feet upon his passing. Another soulless husk of a human being.... sensing a pattern here.

Hopefully they *want* to sustain it.

Back in October, around the time of the VP debate, I was at a company golf function and the subject of politics came up.... generally do more listening than talking when politics come up at work, but I engaged a bit more this time. My golf cart partner didn't like Trump but also was pretty skeptical that he would pursue a lot of what he claimed he would do, or that he would ultimately be successful (ie. would face opposition within his own party on certain issues). Ukraine was an issue specifically identified in this exchange. I have no idea who he ultimately pulled the lever for, but regardless of which way he pulled the lever, a big part of both of Trump's wins has been the idea that he wouldn't attempt to do a lot of what he said he was going to do. And with Ukraine, he has transparently been in favor of leaving them out to dry. He has never really hid the ball, dating back to when he was President in 2020; this is part of who he is. None of this should be surprising. He advertised it, and this action by Mike Johnson is him acting out on that promise by removing an obstacle (ie. a Pro-Ukrainian GOP Chairman)

First time I've looked at 538 (or any polling) since the election... Just on how corporate America and the media has been acting in the runup to his inauguration, you would expect his number to be at least 10 points higher My hot take (which really isn't that hot honestly, but is treated like one these days) is that he was elected in spite of his flaws (not because of them), and that it is all primarily about the economy and inflation. Yet his fans, the media and Trump's team, for differing reasons, are all incentivized to look toward culture wars to explain it all away.

We'll also see how long the peace actually lasts...

To an extent maybe. But even relative to other things that involve Washington (including January 6th, which I've been reliably told doesn't matter anymore), it's pretty clear that their efforts to make fetch happen on HB didn't take.

Peter Hamby made some comments on The Bulwark pod yesterday that stuck out to me about Zuck when he said that the guy essentially has no clear message or core values. He doesn't believe anything and he just flaps in the wind. It also probably explains why his political instincts are **** and why he's always the last guy to jump on a bandwagon before the wheels fall off. Either way, it's always been the case regardless of whatever political positions he's staked out. He's the absolute worst of us as a country and it's kinda weird to see a supporter of Donald "Man of the People" Trump signal boosting this guy.

Same probably goes for most of the American public, if we're being honest.

1) I don't think most hard core Trump supporters care all that much about the issues deep down. It's mostly about entertainment value at this point (as tedious and boring as the show is) 2) A feature of Term 1 that will not doubt roll over into Term 2 is the concept of normal, non-fanatical people being fed chicken**** mixed with shards of glass in it and being told it's chicken salad. Happened all the time the first time around and, lo and behold, it happened today with Pete Hegseth

The reports from his Fox News colleagues are out there... Along with his own comments on his drinking, which alludes to this being a real issue for him (via NYT): In an interview on Megyn Kelly’s SiriusXM show last month, Mr. Hegseth acknowledged concerns about his drinking had put his nomination at risk. He promised then that there “won’t be a drop of alcohol on my lips” if he is confirmed. I don't have any reason to doubt any of it. Although the ultimate disqualification is his lack of experience and resume to run the Pentagon. Given that he apparently hasn't run a damn thing in his life. The questions of his demons, not mention the martial infidelity and sexual assault allegations, are just extra kindling on the fire
