We need roster spots for Skubal, Rodriguez, Vest, Greene and Baddoo. Shreve hasn't really Impressed me this season. The having to face 3 hitter rule really hurts his effectiveness. Could he be moved or sent down?
Was Chafin even offered a fair contract in Detroit? Fulmer and Chafin were mostly effective last season and there's only one reason they weren't kept around...money. Having a low payroll and maximizing profit is the goal of any business. Let's see what happens this off-season when a few contracts come off the books.
Fulmer...soon to be a FA...traded.
Soto...up for arbitration...traded
Candelario..up for arbitration..released.
Chafin...FA...unsigned
And there are several other examples. So yeah, there's a track record of not paying players and either letting them walk or trading them.
But a player under contract? Harris will keep them. So Schoop will be here all season unless some team is really hard up for a 2nd baseman. His trade value is as close to zero as it gets.
The next few weeks may even determine if the Tigers are....buyers? With quality SP coming back, followed by Greene and Baddoo, this team may be ready to take off? I think we have an advantage in strength of schedule.
I agree. If he wants to opt out, trade him for whatever we can get. Harris probably wants him to opt out to save the money. Miggy, Schoop and Rodriguez off the books would make for a cheap payroll.
So with Skubal, Rodriguez and Faedo all coming back, we'll have a SP to trade. Rodriguez? Is it legal to talk to him (or his agent) to find out if they're going to opt out for sure? It sure would be nice to have some SP depth for the next injury. And I hear Mize may be back in September?
Give Short full time at bats and we'll see. Is that the only alternative? Because it really isn't an option. There's a kid coming up thru our system....Santana. Supposed to be our SS of the future.
So the Tigers could have not offered him arbitration and then just signed him for less money? I thought once we declined, we weren't allowed to negotiate with him?
It could be a season killer though. We'll never know if the Tigers would win more games with him in the lineup. It goes further than stats, it has to do with the attitude and confidence of the rest of the team.
