  1. I look at the Dombrowski years as one of the longer periods of Tiger success. True most of the talent was acquired and I was not a fan of depleting the farm system but the end result was as good as the 1980s run, 1984 aside. Tiger teams seem to be highly competitive for a 4 to 6 year window and then drop off. Avila took over with a lot of assets and could have brought the team back pretty quickly but his trades were terrible and he drafted as bad as Dombrowski did. But Harris seems to be pulling a group of youngsters comparable to the Tigers early 1960s and latter 1970s. It would be great if he could manage to churn a talented roster long after the high draft picks disappear.
  2. It's good you can still remember that.
  3. I am predicting here and now that Maeda pitches reasonably well this spring, and because of that Detroit is able to trade him to a team desperate for starters. At $10 million, he could be a bargain and some team short of experienced arms might just take a flyer. He won't start here and he isn't that much use in the pen. We will get a couple Fetter specials in return.
  4. Players scoring runs and it took me awhile to realize they were Tigers
  5. Wish Clemens was a better breeder though.
  6. I'm starting to get confused on what is the front end and what is the back end of this rotation. It could all flip very easily. TG for Skubal to anchor it all.
  7. I was going to post that Mize will be the Tigers breakthrough surprise this year, but actually there are quite a few players that could do that.
  8. Already leading the Cubs in spring homers.... https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs/2025/02/20/gage-workman-cranks-the-cubs-first-home-run-of-the-spring/https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs/2025/02/20/gage-workman-cranks-the-cubs-first-home-run-of-the-spring/ Apparently he has tremendous power.
  9. A chip off the old Chirper
  10. I bet they all own pickups. Not that I'm for or against. Have one myself. Just sayin,
  11. Not if Mrs. Workman has a say. She was pretty vocal in the press about how her hubby was treated.
  12. Seeing what Cody Stavenhagen in The Athletic pointed out is giving me more respect for the Torres signing: "For reference, let’s compare his FanGraphs’ ZiPS projection with another notable infielder: Gleyber Torres: .260/.335/.402, 17 HR, 3.0 fWAR Alex Bregman: .252/.333/.430, 22 HR, 3.9 fWAR" Offensively you are looking at very similar players. Is Bregman's defense worth an additional $25 million? Plus Torres might bring another prospect to the Tigers eventually.
  13. Ernie was the best at capturing that magic of a kid just called up. He did an interview with Fred Holdsworth in the mid-70s that stuck with me. It was Fred's first day and he was bubbling over with excitement. He was thrilled to be interviewed by Ernie and Ernie was as warm and encouraging as could be.
  14. The 1b issue is the curse of Jason Thompson. He was no Norm Cash, said Enos Cabel, who was no Jason Thompson. Baseball Almanac has a kinda creepy stat. In the date of death field they give the rank of living MB players and it's a link to the list. It was a lifelong struggle for him, but Art Schallock now leads all actively living players in age at 100.294 years. Died On: Still Living (1,500 Oldest Living)
  15. It is nice to see that when we shed players from the 40-man, other teams (well, at least Tampa) are now willing to give up a little to put them on their roster.
  16. I would follow you guys on BlueSky if I knew who to follow. Why don't we do a little mini-directory. I'm crunruh.bsky.social
  17. If the Tigers go further into the playoffs if could be possible to catch a baseball, hockey, football and basketball game in Detroit in a weekend. I have a friend who caught a hockey, football and basketball game on a Saturday and Sunday
  18. Hope he doesn't infuse the team with his Yankees attitude.
  19. My first unread post in this thread. The nadar for the season was 4 days away. Aug. 10 0.2%. No top 10 pick for us.
  20. Seems like they were sending out 1b gloves well before Torres was signed reflecting more the decision with respect to Tork than accommodating Gleyber. I believe this gives our right side the potential to be productive next year. Keith should provide average or better defense at first. If Torres starts pushing his offensive numbers back to 2023 levels, something that is not far-fetched for a 28 year-old, we will have very good offense from the position and much offensive improvement at 1b. Ideally, we can harvest another prospect from Gleyber and then in 2026 hand off 2b to McGonigle, unless McGonigle remains a shortstop, in which case Jung or Lee should be ready to take over the position, or maybe even, gulp, Max Anderson. McGonigle and Keith could be the Tigers right side for half a dozen years or longer and I see Torres being a great intermediary step.
  21. Chatgpt's response ""AI isn’t just for billionaires—it’s a tool, like the internet or electricity. If it’s ‘the end of your career,’ maybe the problem isn’t AI but the people in charge. Should we ban calculators too because they replaced the abacus?"
  22. 2015 must have been the year he decided it was worthwhile to get in shape.
  23. If he was a little slimmer he might have been able to get back to 3b on that embarrassing play in the 2012 WS. The Fielders' were estranged if I recall. Son wouldn't speak to the dad. Statistical oddity alert - Both Fielders hit 319 career home runs
  24. Like $10 million a year, and at least one year of that was paid after he retired for health reasons. I still am bitter at the man who showed up his two Tiger seasons fat and then when he's traded to Texas he comes to spring training all in shape. Like he couldn't do that for Mr. Ilitch's money.
