I don’t know if he’s consciously doing PR for The Man, but Dan does have a daughter in her 20s, so I could see where he simply has a visceral personal distaste for the entire sordid episode and the man attached to it. There could be a smattering of Believe The Woman at play here, too.

I agree. I love Dan as an announcer, and he was very nice and gracious and generous the time I interviewed him for my long-dead blog, but it was disappointing to see him lean on tired tropes such as Bauer somehow finagled the system to get a judge who would be sympathetic to him.

I think Trump lawyers embark on a high risk-high reward path when they take the job for him. If things go wrong or upside-down, as they so often do, they suffer grave career injury and even their own indictments for acts they undertook on his behalf. But, if Trump wins, they believe they will be showered with gold and jewels and whatever other cartoonish riches they envision when Trumpism finally triumphs in America. Of course, they’re not good lawyers anyway, certainly in the bottom two quintiles of professional ability, so maybe they weren’t getting the jobs at great law firms they aspired to once they finally passed the bar on their eighth or ninth try.

Apropos of nothing, I do the midweek shopping for us since I am out and about on scheduled trips anyway. I frequently pick up eggs at Mariano’s on these trips and most of the time, they don’t even have prices on display with the standard eggs I get. Some premium-priced eggs do have prices and I see they cost three-something these days. But Mariano’s does have a lot of items without price tags throughout the store, or items routinely and persistently misracked behind price labels for other items, and, of course, palates of unopened still-bubble-wrapped inventory on the floor in the middle of the aisles during the middle of the day. I love living in Big Shoulders, but I gotta believe our grocery stores are among the worst of any large city in America.

I don’t think this story, or this kind of iconography, resonates with the evangelicals, who make up the plurality of red hats, at all. Evangelicals don’t believe in any special status for Mary: that she was a perpetual virgin; that she was raised into heaven via the Assumption; that she was immaculately conceived and sinless while on Earth; or that she should be venerated or even prayed to as the Queen of Heaven. In fact, praying to Mary is considered a blatant apostasy since all honor and glory should be reserved to Jesus Christ and him alone. Therefore, veneration of her is idolatrous heresy, and beyond that, it is a sore spot for them that Catholics believe all these things about Mary, and serves as a linchpin of their argument that Catholics are not even to be considered Christians. So attempts to appeal to their religious soft spot by using her in this example would probably fall well short of the mark. Mary is, more or less, just another woman from ancient times to them, albeit one who did God a solid.
