They have a modest manufacturing base and now they basically exist as a self-sustaining metro area. They have fewer people living in Alpena now than they did in 1890.

Alpena is the second-smallest TV market in the country. The reason it is even one at all is its remoteness.
  3. How the American healthcare system has become primarily a discount dispenser for healthy people. I went to the dermatologist for my annual. The list price of the visit was $175. The cost to me was $101. So basically, the $1,300/month we are paying for health insurance got me a 42% discount on the visit. Since our annual deductible is up into the five figures, only a major health issue will allow us to get our insurance company to pay for anything beyond a negotiated discount for medical services. The only real benefit of health insurance in America is as a hedge against really expensive diseases, and not even all of those qualify.

By way of comparison, the United States' HFI is 8.23.

California received the most federal aid of any state: $116.0 billion. Rounding out the top five were New York ($79.2 billion), Texas ($68.2 billion), Florida ($41.7 billion), and Pennsylvania ($41.0 billion). States that relied the most on federal grants varied in size, demographic makeup, and location. Vermont relied on federal grants the most: 35.8% of its budget came from the federal government. West Virginia followed at 34.1%, and Alaska at 33.9%. On a per-person basis, Washington, DC, received the most: $6,983. Wyoming received more than any other state, at $6,894 per person. Georgia received the least federal funding per person, with $1,807 in 2020. Florida, despite receiving more federal funding than 46 other states, received the second least per person: $1,937. Federal grants are divided into two categories: formula grants and competitive grants. Formula grants are based on such factors as population size, poverty rates, or specific needs of the area. Competitive grants require state and local governments to submit applications outlining their plans to use the grant money effectively.
  9. I don't believe it. The campaign knew, it's all about defiance, and the red hats are eating it up.
  10. He/they totally planned that. It is ...
  11. He’s ready to. Well that’s a relief.
  12. They have already flat out told us that. https://gop.com/blog/dems-push-woke-agenda-in-schools-az/
  13. The perception by people of inflation is directly related to the media they consume.
  14. We might be better-positioned to get something good for Lorenzen than for Eduardo. Lorenzen is a known quantity: two-month rental, having a decent year, able to slot into the bullpen in October, easy peasy. Eduardo is not just a rental, though, he also has an option, and in a way it’s the worst of all worlds. If a team trades for him and he kills it, he’s opting out. If he collapses, he’ll stick around for the money. If he gets good and hurt, like Tommy John hurt, he’ll just accept the option and get paid to convalesce on the new team’s dime. All this applies to the Tigers keeping him, too. So it might or might not be even a Verlander-level return, although it should be a lot better than a J.D.-level return.
  15. The worst part was that he traded J.D. with two weeks left, so Avila didn’t even allow J.D.’s market to recover—unless he calculated that he would get an even worse bucket of balls from Arizona if he’d waited until the 31st. The turd cheery on the top is Avila could have waited until the waiver trade deadline of August 31st to trade him, too.
  16. It was also the Angels, too, so ...
  17. Our power almost never goes out. Twice in 21 years, each less than d ay. The second time in 2012, the transformer from the 1960s blew out and took down only our block. Hottest day of the year, natch. They had it replaced within a day.
  18. I know, right? Families, amirite?
  19. Ah, OK, there it is. I wondered where you were going with that.
  20. “Mitch who? I don’t know who he is.”
  21. We’re all sick of the losing but this is right. No point in trading your ace-for-now just to get a standard major league regular.
  22. Greeting from beautiful downtown Detroit, Michigan! That last one is Ohtani getting punched out. 😁
  23. Not sure if you'd be worried about something like this—I mention it only because there are people who are—but I would say don't worry about walking back to the hotel in downtown Detroit after dark. It's Saturday night in the summer, there will be people all over the place running around having a good time doing their own thing, and it will be as safe as any other place you can be.
