Sig Mejdal is the keynote speaker at the SABR conference here in Baltimore. He described how much or a self-imposed hole the Orioles were in: multiple 100-loss seasons, terrible farm system, no analytics, utilizing the best practices of the 80s. Sound familiar? He said he and others were brought on board to overhaul and modernize their systems to start competing in 2018. They appear to start turning the corner this July of 2022. So perhaps that is telling us what our own timeline will be, and that’s dependent on whether we do it right in the first place.

What pitcher do we have that could return even a single decent position player or prospect?

I was wondering whether it was more a Mike Coolbaugh homage but Mike was never with the Orioles.

How much you wanna bet that once it dawns on Kody Clemens that he will never be a starting position player, he tries to switch to pitching to save his career? His fastball touches 94, including a 92-mph cutter, and he has already thrown six different types of pitches in his mop-up appearances.

I’m in Delaware watching an Orioles game on the hotel TV. It’s bad enough that they run Draft Kings advertising literally every inning break. It’s doubly worse that it is the same spot over and over. It’s like I’m watching an MLB.tv stream rather than one of the top RSNs in the country.

“Oppo taco.” Ick.

Comments: I think Baez could be a 4-win player pretty consistent if he gets a hitting coach he respects working with him. I think it’s a real stretch to expect the bullpen to continue performing the way they have, a least in terms of RA9-WAR-type outcome. I would think Schoop’s 2023 will be better hitting, worse fielding, something in the 1-2 win range. I actually have some confidence that if Candelario gets good, consistent coaching, his hitting could float upward toward his 2019-20 levels. I think 100-110 wRC+ is doable for him for a couple more years. I’ll bet Brieske won’t be pitching for the team come next All-Star break. I have no earthly idea what Eduardo Rodriguez’s situation is, but it wouldn’t surpsie me if he does not pitch out the contract. He might even limp along like Zimmerman for his last couple years. TORK! will end up being just fine, and I still see All-Star nods in his future.

I think it is worth highlighting here that Schoop, by Statcast or OAA is having a career year resurgence in the field, so I wouldn’t necessarily bank that same performance for next year just year. Just because Schoop is playing out of his mind in the field this year doesn’t necessarily mean we should reject moving Baez to second even next year.

Some franchises have to overpay to get even adequate veterans to sign with them. Part of that might be the perception of the franchise, its city, and the direction things are going in; it could also be that the front office guy signing the veterans like Schoop don’t know how to effectively negotiate free agent contracts.

If we end up lazily picking up Travis Demerritte the same way we’ve been lazily picking up Devils We Know for the past few years, then I think that basically disqualifies Sam Menzin from consideration for the permanent gig.

Because he wasn't retired. He couldn't lip off while being required to kowtow to the tyranny of his customer base. Now that he is retiring, he can mouth off all he wants.

Did Fox never report the Benghazi hearings? I’d’ve thought they’d’ve devoted their entire network to it. I gotta wonder whether Fox News viewers feel as though their intelligence is being insulted here, or whether they are “in on the joke”. Even they can’t honestly believe the hearings never happened.

Maybe not “clean”, per se, but funny!

He's including the $8 million buyout. If they're going to do it, they really should do a Bobby Bonilla payout deal.

You may be assuming that Chris Ilitch despises A.J. Hinch as much as you do, but that may not be the case. Heck, there’s still a chance Baby Doc makes A.J. his new GM!

Perhaps the average GM could have unlocked a couple of top prospects for Fulmer a couple years ago, but Al could not have, because as we have long suspected and now know for certain, that ability was always beyond his skill set.
-
He as the owner is supposed to accept final responsibility for the moves which he surely had to approve, rather than throw up his hands as say hey, it wasnt me, it’s a no my job.
-
Which means he was never suited for the job of major league GM.
