  1. Highlighted the part below in bold red: Might those not be three underlying reasons why young white men shoot up public places? Also, the part about appealing to young men. Feels like the industry is spurring mass shootings with knowledge aforethought. 5. Gun sellers' new pitch: Man up! The Martinez family views rifles in the exhibit hall during the NRA convention in Houston last month. Photo: Brandon Bell/Getty Images An emboldened gun industry is luring buyers with rhetoric of fear, machismo and defiance, the N.Y. Times reports (subscription): "Gun companies have spent the last two decades ... refocusing their message away from hunting toward selling handguns for personal safety, as well as military-style weapons attractive to mostly young men." Pressure points the industry has found useful in selling more guns: "self-esteem, lack of trust in others, fear of losing control." Why it matters: The tactics have been remarkably successful. "Firearm sales have skyrocketed, with background checks rising from 8.5 million in 2000 to 38.9 million last year," The Times notes. "Women, spurred by appeals that play on fears of crime and being caught unprepared, are the fastest-growing segment of buyers."
  2. We are now ten full weeks into the season, so courtesy of Fangraphs, here is the Tigers' hitting performance by week-of-season. Highlighted are our MLB rank in runs scored and well as our wRC+ each week. "High"lights: The Tigers have not yet ranked higher than 20th in runs scored in any given week. Amazingly, the Tigers have never finished 30th, either—although we have finished 28th or 29th six of the ten weeks. We haven't had even one week with a wRC+ higher than 93 (average major league team for whole season = 100) Nine of ten weeks, we had a team batting average of .228 or less. Nine of ten weeks, our OBP was lower than the current MLB season OBP of .311. Our best SLG for any week is still 24 points lower than the current MLB season SLG of .392. Conclusion: we have not had even one good hitting week yet.
  3. How do you mean this?
  4. That is a complete mess of a batting order.
  5. Can you imagine how bad it would be if he’s still been playing first? By the way … option Tork?
  6. Maybe. Never know what goes on behind golden doors!
  7. Here come the Kremlin twitterbots!
  8. I wonder whether anyone with any influence on things has ever made an overt connection between banning immigrants and banning abortion. After all, if they can successfully ban immigrants, they’re gonna need the cheap labor they’ll lose as a result, and the most godly way to replace that cheap labor is to force poor American women to have their babies. It’s a long term solution, but then, visionaries do think long term. Lucky for them, these issues the #1 and #2 issues for rank and file red hats who vote.
  9. Disingenuous stat. That bad 2020 team got to 12 under, but they also played only 60 games.
  10. Man, you have been especially on fire of late, keep up the good work
  11. He too worked for a relatively old-money billionaire family that values loyalty above all.
  12. I’ll bet all the GoT prequels and sequels will be just as great as season eight.
  13. I’m sorry, I can’t figure out what you’re referring to?
  14. I was talking about him exercising an out, not the contract ending.
  15. First of all I don’t think AJ gets fired until after at least three years, unless the Tigers have no confidence in the plan they just upended their entire development system to implement. If he leaves on his own, he already has another job. If he gets let go, I don’t think he’s on the beach for than a year before he lands on his feet. Major league managing is a very tight, regenerative community, and ruggedly handsome middle-aged men still have an edge.
  16. I don’t see Lynn calling for Avila’s ouster. That would be access suicide. I do see him excusing Al (“Avila in August will be seven years into a makeover that demanded at least seven years to assess”) and attaboy-ing him for the limited successes he’s thinks Al’s had (trading Justin Upton for Elvin Rodriguez) as well as giving him full credit for the relief pitching success without even including the word Fetter anywhere in the piece. I do see Lynn calling for the trade of Tarik Skubal, though …
  17. Austin Meadows had COVID back in July of 2020.
  18. What’s our record when both teams score three or less?
  19. Fuckin’ RINO after all … 😁
