  1. I forgot Friday is your night. You know, this holding off with the building of suspense is sort of like acting you’ve forgotten your child’s birthday and then you “surprise” them at the end of the day. As a fan with a near child-like affection for the team, I personally find this annoying, but oh well.
  2. It’s interesting that everyone and their grandmother knows that Casey Mize is now an All-Star although the Tigers mlb.com page has still said nothing about it. I guess updating things on that app is not something of particular urgency for whomever is in charge.
  3. So the Tigers have six guys on the team out of 35. Torres, Baez, Riley, Skubal, McKinstry, and now Mize. The last I checked, we were tied with the Dodgers for five players so now we have more than anyone else. Posted six hours ago I counted the number of players on the AL roster and it was 35 but when I asked this question through Google it said there were 32 players, 33 players, and 34 players and none of these various AI generated articles agreed with each other. Apparently Google AI cannot discriminate between data in terms of linear time because at one time all these different responses were true, so it “thinks” they are all true and equivalent now. So I think I’ll trust the MLB site and my ability to count. [EDIT] As of 7:10 AM EDT there is still no independent confirmation that Mize has been added to the All-Star roster.
  4. Mariners blew a 5–0 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning and lost in the bottom of the 10th 6–5 to the Yankees.
  5. That’s what I’m thinking.
  6. Bryan Woo Was pitching a no hitter for the Mariners who are leading the Yankees 5–0 in the bottom of the eighth before he gave up two hits. Unfortunately I can’t watch this game, but I like seeing the Yankees lose.
  7. I can’t find any independent verification that Skubal will start the All-Star game for the AL team. I think the Orioles announcers were speaking hypothetically given that almost everybody on earth thinks it would not only be a legitimately justified choice, but great from a marketing angle as well. The only place I could find where anyone was predicting differently is from a writer on Motor City Bengals speculated that Aaron Boone might instead play favorites and name his own starter Max Fried. Hopefully, when Skubal pitches an astonishing stellar game on national TV tomorrow night it will be obvious that he is the best choice to start.
  8. The Orioles just defeated the New York Mets in a doubleheader in Baltimore and the faces in the New York Mets dugout were very, very very grim.
  9. My son just called me upon leaving the local Regal RPX theater after watching James Gunn’s new Superman and he said it’s the most incredible superhero movie he’s ever seen and he’s been watching them for 15 years now so he’s kind of an expert. I trust his judgment on this. He said it easily exceeds Endgame which was pretty incredible. Sometime tomorrow we’ll see it in standard.
  10. For the first time in a long time I actually care, not that my “caring“ means much more than anyone else’s, but we all have a lot more at stake in this than we usually do. This thread is not intended to take the place of a specific game thread, but is just for the random discussion that arises leading up to the All-Star festivities What motivated me is that when I tuned in to mlb.tv to discover that the lowly Orioles are trying to complete a doubleheader sweep of the mighty New York Mets, one of the first things I heard from the announcers is that Skubal has been named the starter for the game. I don’t have any more confirmation of that yet, but whatever, knock yourselves out.
  11. I enjoyed the above discussion on DRS and WAR. It reminded me of the games and discussions among the smart kid Junior Stargazers In Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City.” This is a compliment by the way. I’m not being snarky. It’s one of the reasons I come here aside from begging for six runs. I actually learn things.
  12. That took some work and you had to read a bunch of stuff. I’m impressed, not that I think you can’t read or anything, but what you had to read.
  13. Although I chide Todd Jones I want to reiterate that I like him. He is a part of the lore of this club. My understanding is that Ernie loved him. I also understand that he’s a huge baseball fan who immersed himself in the history and lore of every team he played for because it was important to him and to the fans for whom he performed. In this sense he’s one of us, only he happens to actually have been a player too.
  14. Every team, but the Tigers, in the Central won today with collateral damage occurring at the expense of the Blue Jays and the Astros, both of whom we need to see fall. We still have envious leads over everyone, so aside from the Tigers losing it was a tremendous day.
  15. Guardians now leading Astros 4–0.
  16. The Guardians have righted their leaking ship and are still leading the Astros in the seventh 2–0.
  17. In terms of “scoreboard watching“ the White Sox won today and the Royals, the Guardians, and the Twins are all leading in their respective games.
  18. Studio on Apple TV was really good. It’s amazing how they managed to make studio execs characters you could empathize with, sort of a “sympathy for the devil” kind of thing.
  19. It’s free for me. My son pays for it and I like to watch the Foundation series which will be out soon, but that’s about the only thing I’ve watched on it aside from a couple other series.
  20. The audio in AJ‘s Detroit-based post game remarks is truly awful. I noticed when they were on the road the audio was normal. I don’t know why they can’t fix this.
  21. Looking forward to Friday’s game now.
  22. Loss. The Rays won this game. The Tigers didn’t lose it. I guess.
  23. Five runs would do it. They’ve done it before. They have embarrassed my embrace of fatalism numerous times.
  24. Frankie All-Star too
  25. To the Tigers credit, they do not spend a lot of time zeroing in only on hot young babes in the stands.
