Maybe they want to do the same thing the Wings hoped and have him develop the young guys to a point they are playoff ready and then fire him for a real coach that doesn’t look and coach like Gru from Minions. I always thought Blashill handled the young Wings oddly so it'll be interesting to see what he does with the hawks... Quote

buddha Posted May 22 Posted May 22 any time canada loses its good for hockey. sorry stanley. no offense. Quote
buddha Posted May 23 Posted May 23 most unsurprising thing ever. brendan drafted nylander, marner, and matthews. then signed tavares. not bad. however...with all that talent they only madr it out of the first round TWICE. and he sooooooooooo messed up the marner situation that its going to leave the leafs with (probably) nothing for one of their best players. leafs podcasts have been so funny lately. lordstanley Posted May 23 Author Posted May 23 The way the Panthers have dismantled the Canes in the first two games, the Leafs should conclude that they are not that far away after all and should make no changes at all. Just keep doing what they’ve been doing. Quote
GalagaGuy Posted May 25 Posted May 25 You'd think there were 30 points separating Florida and Carolina in the standings the way this series is going. Holy crap! Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted June 1 Posted June 1 I was shopping at Meijer once years ago and Ken Holland came up to me and bought me a case of beer. I asked why the beer, he said you'll need it to be able to watch the team I put on the ice. Fair enough I said. Quote

buddha Posted June 3 Posted June 3 Bucci plugging don cherry and barry melrose for the hockey hall of fame. i remember watching coaches corner every saturday night on hockey night in canada on channel 9. appointment tv back in the 80s and 90s when we only had 5 or 6 channels. once the wings started to get good with russians he turned against them, which was annoying. and by the time i stopped watching as much, he'd become even more of a cariacture of himself. towards the end, once cable was everywhere and espn and other us tv had hockey on a lot, i would see him from time to time in even more outlandish suits and starched collars, ranting against foreigners and supporting canadian farmboys. i understand that his brand of politics is toxic, but i would think about him in the hall of fame just for the effect he had on hockey broadcasting back in the day. i wonder what canadians (not habs fans, who probably hate him) think about cherry now? Cherry's firing and Ron Maclean's meekishness during that week is seen by many as a symbol of the Trudeau era. That said, Cherry had long overstayed, he should have retired or been put out to pasture during an offseason a good 10-15 years earlier than he was (he was 85 when he was let go, 91 now and doing podcasts with his son but a shadow of himself given his age and failing voice/energy). His schtick was predictable and got boring, especially after hearing basically the same thing for 20 years. But no doubt he should be a slam dunk Hockey Hall of Famer in the media wing as should Barry Melrose. Surprised they aren't already in. This year's inductees? François Gagnon and Daryl Reaugh. Budd Lynch got in 1985 and Bruce Martyn in 1991. Mike Emrick in 2008. Mickey Redmond in 2011. Dave Strader 2017. https://www.tsn.ca/gagnon-reaugh-named-to-hockey-hall-of-fame-media-wing-1.2314635 https://www.hhof.com/general/fosterhewittmemorialaward.html Quote
slothfacekilla Posted June 3 Posted June 3 Don Cherry, Barry Melrose and John Bucigross are all awful in my opinion. But each for different reasons. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted June 3 Posted June 3 I like John Bucigross and liked him back in the NHL2Nite days of ESPN. What's wrong with Bucci? Quote
buddha Posted June 3 Posted June 3 i cant stand buccigross. hey, remind me again where that guy went to college. its so annoying. Quote

To me he talks like he's trying to be a zoomer or whatever and it gets old really quickly with me, but mostly I think he is absolutely awful when he calls games live. He has no flow to his speech, he interjects too many stupid asides about players in the middle of play (see buddha's post) and a lot of times it seems like he defaults to just saying the names of the player who has the puck without anything else so it just sounds like he's listing people off of rosters. In my mind ESPN clearly sees him as their worst PBP too because he seems to get saddled with awful broadcast partners and games. I liked him when ESPN only gave hockey a token like 8 minutes on Sportscenter with him talking because he seems genuinely passionate about it. As soon as he had to do any more he started to annoy me for whatever reason. I straight up mute broadcasts and listen to music if he's doing play by play. 1 Quote
lordstanley Posted June 3 Author Posted June 3 (edited) I don't know if there's any great national PBP men on either side of the border. Chris Cuthbert gets the #1 assignments in Canada and he will be remembered here for his call of the Crosby golden goal in 2010, but something about his voice doesn't quite sit right with me. I can definitely see why Jack Michaels is loved by Oilers fans, but I think too one-sided for the national broadcasts he has been doing. John Bartlett is OK I guess but hasn't been given top national exposure yet beyond Habs games. Harnarayan Singh may have the best balance of steady PBP with excitement when warranted. Of course none of these names probably mean anything to Americans, lol. Edited June 3 by lordstanley Quote
