Fat Azz **** I wholeheartedly disagree with ranking Fontes ahead of Ross and even Clark although I wasn't around for most of the Clark regime. @buddha touched on it. Fontes was a caricature, a clown. I remember him as a coach that had no idea how to coach in game, his best characteristic was being a nice/funny guy that players liked but the guy had no clue how to actually coach a game or put a gameplan together. He rode a HoF RB, a wealth of receivers and mostly decent defenses to mediocre results. The worst was The Win Killer M Era. Millen, Mayhew, Morningweg, Marinelli, Mariucci. Vomit Inducing. Motown Bombers
Here's the worst part about the Lions. In the 90's, they had in their front office Kevin Colbert, Rick Spielman, and Thommas Dimitroff, all three of them had varying success after the Lions. Colbert, especially, left the Lions in 2000 and the Lions hired Millen in 2001 who had no experience of any kind running a team. Millen really should have been hired for the current Spielman role. Jason_R
Just now, Motown Bombers said: Millen really should have been hired for the current Spielman role. Yes. I seem to recall a lot of consternation about the Spielman hire. “What’s his role?” “They need to hire a GM first!” But Sheila hit a home run with that Spielman hire. He seems to be an honest broker between ownership and the football side. Millen could have done that, and established accountability on the football side, but WCF was not astute enough to know he needed that.
