Only Cash (leadoff) and Brinkman (cleanup) did not bat in those spots in any other game that season. All the other players had at least one other game in their slots.

which means it was almost cetainly not random.  I wonder if putting Brinkman clean-up was really directed towards Cash?

I vaguely remember being a bit disappointed that the line-up had not changed that much.  I was only 9, so I didn't understand random samples, but when I heard he picked the line-up out of a had, I was expecting something more bizzare.

Mid Summer Sunday day game, Billy was probably too hung over to care what he was doing.

My foggy memory is that the Tigers were in a slump and he wanted to shake things up. Analytics...out the window...lol

The day the Tigers attacked the White Sox for wearing the ugliest uniforms in the history of baseball.

The announcer doesn't know a very important fact. Farmer broke Al Cowens face with a HBP in the year before. Cowens was just waiting his chance to kick his as*.

I couldn't read it. No Facebook account. 😒

It’s about how in 1972 when the team was slumping terribly Billy Martin just threw the names of all the starters into a hat and randomly drew them out and batted Norm cash in leadoff and Ed Brinkman in cleanup and it worked.

I remember the Free Press running a picture Cowens and Farmer standing at home plate st Tiger Stadium shaking hands, in a show of burying the hatchet I guess, and they looked for all the world like they still wanted to kill each other.

Just saw that Al Cowens died an early death, age 50, from a heart attack. I could see him having the stress of being angry all the time. That takes a toll on your body.
