Yean, it really costs us nothing in the end given the term and length of the contract. JVR was surprisingly more productive than I thought he'd be when I looked up his stats just now. 16 goals and 36 points for a 35 year old player last season. Not bad and if he were to give us similar numbers on the 3rd line, I guess I wouldn't complain.

The Athletic keeps floating that the Wings had something big in mind for this offseason which seems like a lofty claim, but the only thing that makes sense to me for that is trading for Miller after Garikov signs but I will expect nothing so I'm not disappointed.

There was enough smoke about Miller that I suspect something was going on that didn't work out. I saw a story last night that said Emily Kaplan reported that NYR didn't like the offer made by Detroit. (Can't find the original tweet.)

Either way, it's time to see what the kids can do. With ASP developing they have the makings of their first two pairs. Can they trust the prospects with the back end of the lineup?

This is not a bad signing day for Yzerman. A bad day would have been signing bad contracts to fill cap space for the heck of it. It isn’t a great day, because no upgrade yet, but it’s not a bad day.

My wife is getting mad at the Ken Holland memes I'm sending her, I am more than fine with what the Wings have done so far lol.

I wonder if someone is going to drastically overpay Ehlers at this point

NHL radio on Sirius was wondering whether the Jets take another shot at Ehlers tonight. Like Boeser seemed to have said goodbye to the Canucks but came back.

the kings are finding out just how bad ken holland actually is.

I was thinking the same thing.

Does he know that not every FA is going to the Hall of Fame?

The Kings are in a much different spot than the Wings.   They have to make moves.  They have a solid core of veteran players but it’s proven to not be good enough to get past the Oilers.   They can’t run it back again and hope the 4th time will be different.

Moving on from Rob Blake was the right move but hiring Holland is already a disaster.    His first move to keep his buddy Jim Hiller is now made worse by Gavirkov taking less to not play for him.    Throwing term at stiffs like Ceci and Dumoulin and signing Corey Perry has mad the team worse for more than just one year.

We all have bad sports opinions and takes over the years. I've had many of them. But Kenny continues to vindicate me and a lot of fans who recognized what a fraud and a bad GM this guy is. I know we won the Cup in 2008 and made another one in 2009 that we should have won. I know we had the playoff streak and all that. But in the post-cap NHL, and certainly when tasked with a rebuild, Kenny has proven he isn't up to getting the job done.

He just loves signing old, washed, veterans for some reason and does little to make his core roster younger, faster, tougher, and better overall. He then gets married to these guys he signs and offers them too long a term or resigns them long after others would have let them walk. He only had the success he did in Edmonton because he inherited 2 of the top 5 players in the league. Without McDavid and Draisaitl being there from the start, Kenny would have never sniffed the playoffs in Edmonton. Much less had a Stanley Cup Final apperance.

1 year 775k for whoever this is, hopefully just ahl fodder

Him and Bernard-Docker are a couple of 25/26 year-old "4A" AHL right-shot defenseman. Mitchell actually puts up some offensive numbers.

Expect Tuomisto on his two-way to have a lot of attempts at earning a pairing with Edvinsson. And these two guys back-filling in Grand Rapids. Heck, jettison Holl & Petry and maybe Mitchell can even get some 3rd pairing Detroit time... I'm not holding my breath though and I wouldn't recommend it either...

But I think I get what Yzerman is aiming at here...

I think Bernard Docker has a better shot at NHL ice than Tuomisto...if only because he's seen NHL ice

So anybody who has been on the ice in the NHL is automatically better than a youngster who has not yet made it to the NHL...?

I don't get your logic here.

JBD was a 1st rd pick in 2018 and has played almost 150 games in the NHL.  Tuomisto was drafted only one year later and has played two years in the AHL without getting a look at the big club

Maybe I'm wrong here...

But I believe Tuomisto, and Buium, and Wallinder will be getting LOTS of chances with Detroit this year.

Sometimes it takes guys longer to make it to the NHL, and that's especially true of the taller guys (Tuomisto = 6'5") who often struggle with coordination a couple of years. And a Finnish player to boot getting used to the smaller/ faster north American rink.

I think Tuomisto is right on time.

Even without 150 NHL games under his belt.

I'll let Yzerman and his team figure that out.

Interesting though... that they gave Tuomisto a two-way this year...

They gave JBD a two-way contract also... right? Because he has a better chance of playing in Detroit than Tuomisto, per what you are telling us.

Do I have that correct?

tuomisto has a lot of work to do to make the nhl.

I fear that if Tuomisto is seeing any time with the Wings something will have gone terribly wrong, I just don't think he has the footspeed/skating for the NHL but I also don't know what I'm talking about.  It would be cool if he could turn into something because adding another useful tall dude would be a plus.

I personally wanted Wallinder to step up in his bigger role in Grand Rapids last season, but he never really seemed to.  He's a tall, toolsy guy that we're still waiting on to put it all together.  He also seems kinda soft.  I thought what little I saw of Buium live last season, he seemed pretty solid as a second pairing guy for GR, but did seem to make some mistakes in his own zone/neutral zone.  Buium is probably the "closest" to the NHL of the three GR defense from last season in my mind, but Wallinder has a higher ceiling if everything clicks.

It's a shame Anton Johansson went back to play for his dad's team in Sweden because he seemed to do pretty well in his short Griffins stint last season.
