jonathan toews wants to come back.

any interest?

Certainly not any interest for me...he'll turn 38 during next season and hasn't played in two seasons.  I will admit I probably never rated him as high as most of the general public (a lot of Blackhawk hate in my blood) so maybe I am underestimating him.

I could see the Jets signing him to bring home the hometown kid for the end of his career.

I believe the Wings wanted Holland to move on from GMing (for Yzerman?) and Holland said no.  So I don't know if Nill was ever destined to hang around long enough until ownership forced Holland's hand.  It seems like Kenny wanted to hang on as long as possible.

Nill's a great GM but he's still won nothing in 12 years in Dallas🫣

90+ pt teams 9 of 12 years. He's putting a team on the ice that has a real shot almost every year - he'll get a cup if he keeps that up.

It was said 99% in jest (who wouldn't want his rosters?) and 1% to say it is really tough to succeed in the NHL!  I'm running on little sleep so you can probably ignore most of my posts right now, I'm in a goofy mood it feels like 😆

Mitch Marner NHL free agency sweepstakes: Ranking all 32 potential landing spots

"The most likely fits" segment contains four teams, as judged by the Athletic writer: Carolina, LA Kings, Utah and Vegas.

The Wings are one of ten teams listed alphabetically as "the maybes and long shots". "

"Steve Yzerman needs a big swing. The Red Wings’ rebuild is now entering its eighth or ninth year, depending on where you mark the clock, and they could use another star or two to push them forward. They have the cap space to make this work and are still an iconic Original Six franchise, even after all the losing over the past decade. But the shine is off for free agents, and Marner would most likely look elsewhere for a better chance to win."

wings sign kiiskinen to an elc.

LETS GO!

He had a really good year this last year across his season in Finland + WJC.  I'm excited to see where he goes from here, probably at least one more season in Europe I imagine.

If Buch and Kiisk are in GR...

We still have a plethora of smallish skilled players both in Detroit and "AAA" GR.

I'd like to see Stevie Y make a trade. Berggren would be easy... I don't know who else. Ras because he's soft?

I saw an article suggest Detroit trade Copp similar to a guy last year, we pay lots of salary, but get a 1st rounder back. It said the two were nearly identical in skill and cost and performance etc... (forgot the name, I was just breezin' through...). If he does this, I'd like him to trade up the two 1sts and get the biggest, baddest, two-way playing PF he can get his hands on.

I'd like to see him trade for Marchment, not go after Marner.

I want to see some serious effort towards making our team "harder to play against".

I want to see Stevie Y be as active as necessary this offseason to accomplish that. Be active. Be smart. Get us some two-way players with toughness and experience.

Please.

With sugar on top.

berggren is a ufa.

andrew copp is not getting you a first round pick in the offseason.  maybe at the deadline if you squint really hard.  besides, they like copp and he's your C2.  when they were rolling last year it was when copp was playing C with debrincat and kane and kasper was on line one winning corner battles for raymond and larkin.  when copp went down, kasper had to move off line one and that's when the larkin line nosedived.  lack of depth killed them.

you could potentially get a 4th or 5th for ras just because someone might take a gamble on his size.  better off keeping him and seeing if him and elmer can cause damage on a 4th line with compher.

they have the prospects to deal if they want to deal.  but it will be danielson or asp who will have to be moved to bring back anything with realtime value.  like a peterka or a byram.  danielson and a 2nd (or even a first) might get that done, but then you have to commit to $7-$8m.

since they refuse to do offer sheets - and honestly, that's probably wise in the age of salary cap increases because you'd have to massively overpay and give up multiple 1s to get guys - they will likely need to trade to get decent players.

almost everyone has oodles of cap space.  if you want to give $8+ to gavrikov you might be able to pry him away IF the kings truly are in for marner.  but if not, there's no way gavrikov is leaving.

ekblad?  do you want to take a chance on him?  sam bennett at $10m?

Remember the 1st time they called Elmer up they put him out there with Ras and Sundqvuist - sort of a three trees line? I would have liked to see that play out a little longer. Something about being out there and not being the biggest guy seemed to work for Rasmussen.

Would you rather sign Sam Bennett at $10 million per season or trade for Elias Pettersson at $11.5 million? I'd rather go with Bennett, even though Pettersson has been more productive overall in his career. Bennett gives this team more of what it needs with a better combination of skill and toughness on the forecheck. We are one of the worst forechecking teams in the league and Bennett would instantly make that better compared to Pettersson.

All things being equal I'd love to take a flyer on Pettersson but in the real world the Wings are too talent poor an organization to have the luxury to take that kind of risk. They are no position to make an investment that has that much possibility to blow up.

this also, but OTOH, if you actually believe Pettersson would1 put up 100 points wearing the winged wheel, that's has to trump the value of even the best fore-checker. But the bottom line is I just don't see how, as resource constrained as they are, they can take the risk of being wrong about Pettersson and hanging a bust on their cap.

Sounds like the Stars might be looking to move Robertson to get some cap space this offseason?  Kinda surprising but they do have a lot of free agents and Harley will need a new deal after next season.  I guess the Dumba and Lyubushkin deals aren't great for them?

Oh I didn't realize it was this bad: "The Stars have less than $5 million in cap space for 2025-26 with 16 active roster players under contract."

Will be interesting to see where Nill goes from here...

I would absolutely be in on Jason Robertson. I've been flirting with the idea of making a move for Elias Pettersson and Robertson is owed significantly less than Pettersson is and is just as talented and productive a player. Robertson is at around $7.5 million per and Pettersson is at nearly $11.5 million per. There stats are similar across their careers with both having 100 point seasons. He's an RFA after this year and will likely command a much larger contract moving forward, but I would for sure make the deal.

I'm sure a deal for a player as young and as talented as Robertson starts with Danielson or at least multiple prospects and a 1st round pick. I would be ok with trading Danielson plus prospects/picks for Robertson. In a dream world we could move one of Copp or Compher's contracts, find a way to get out from under one of our many bad defensive contracts, and then sign Sam Bennett too.

danielson and a first would be the likely floor.

"find a way to get out from under one of our bad defensive contracts".  how?  we gave up a second to get rid of an actual good player (walman), what will we have to give up to get rid of holl?  chairot isnt going anywhere, he's a useful player if a bit overpaid.

youre better off just ltir'ing holl.

Interesting when you put them side by side. Aside from his salary cost, Pettersson might cost you a lot less in players - because you're taking the bigger risk.
