I expect us to sign a mid level FA, but I think our best options out of that bunch to find solid #2 and #3 to slide in behind Skubal are Olsen, SGL, Melton, a Flaherty who gets back to 2024 consistency, Mize taking another step and Jobe returning. Other than trading for Ryan, (which I would be open to) I’d rather keep our prospects and not spend big $ on a FA starter. Not being a ****, but that's the kind of "hope and pray" that put us in the position we're in this year. It's just not going to cut it and will waste our last year with Skubal. Neither Mize nor Olsen are a #2 in a title contender. If Mize takes the next step, that's him becoming a consistent #3 who can prove he can last 6+ innings and/or not give up 4+ runs once every 4 starts. He hasn't shown that. If Olsen can stay healthy, he can be an OK #3. He showed some promise in the postseason, but 9 innings in 2 starts isn't going to cut it with a below average bullpen. Out of the rest, Jobe will be a total non-factor in 2026. Flaherty looks terrible and I have no interest in bringing him back. I like Melton and hope he can be a #4 but I'll settle for a #5 next year. And I'm just not high on SGL. His stuff is so hittable at the major league level. So once again, we'll find ourselves in the same position in 2026. Not to mention, what happens in 2027 when we lose Skubal? This team needs to find a top of the rotation guy before they find themselves with none. Quote

Cease and Senga have the talent to be aces with the right coaching. Sale is very good, although not likely to be available. Free agent lists are never deep, but I don't see this list as "piss poor". Trades can be made too. Valdez just threw at his own catcher. Hard pass. Imanaga and King aren't going anywhere. And Cease and Senga have been terrible. And yes, trades can be made. Read the thread and you'll see that's the point I'm trying to make. Harris didn't make the trade necessary to be a contender this year, and it will cost us in the playoffs. And most of the board seems OK with that in order to keep prospects. There's nothing more frustrating than being a playoff team with no legit shot at winning a title. Quote
oblong Posted September 7 Posted September 7 You make it sound like a video game where as long as things balance out on paper, in your opinion, then the deal gets processed. Like a credit card transaction. Each org determines the value of who they want and who they give up. You don’t know what that value is, on either side, because you weren’t in on the discussions. 2 1 Quote

They are not in a terrible position this year, not when they have Skubal. It would be nice to have Schilling and Johnson, but you don't necessarily need two aces to win the World Series. Who did the Rangers have in 2023? Who did the Dodgers have last year that was remotely comparable to Skubal? I agree 2027 without Skubal is a concern. Quote

Every team has a shot and no team is likely ti win it all. Some have a better chance than others, but it's largely a crap shoot. The best team might have a 15% shot, the worst team a 5% shot. The Tigers are probably right in the middle. I am going to enjoy the show. 2 Quote

Also, team that would seriously consider trading their core ace rotation pieces can do just as well if not better by waiting until the winter, versus hurriedly putting together a deal to beat an in-season deadline. Tigermojo Posted September 7 Posted September 7 I hope the 2026 Detroit Tigers will be just as terrible as the 2025 version. 2 Quote

Oh, this is a painful recollection, but it’s true. I remember our teams back then going out on 7-game West Coast trips and returning 1-6 or 2-5. Quote
