at about the 5 minute mark they were already starting to be back on their heels and the Krakon hadn't even put the extra man out yet and it was looking like another goal would be given up late, but they managed to pick it up. Talbot almost gave away with a sloppy play where he turned his back thinking he was leaving it for ASP behind the net but a Krakon got there first.

Honestly they seemed to be locking it down. I don’t remember anything overly scary. They covered this on the broadcast a few times. McClellan has even said this a few times since the Sabers meltdown.

Personally, my favorite part of Danielson’s first goal was how absolutely thrilled ASP was. You’d think he’d scored the way he was acting. That’s was super cool to me. Oh, and Finnie went and got the puck.

It will be forgotten because it was called back. But it deserves a moment.

It was an impressive play. You don’t score a goal like that by accident.

Edit: Also the assist. Great vision and patience with the puck. Knew what he was doing to draw defense and make space for the shooter. And executed a perfect pass. He demonstrated a lot as a playmaker and a finisher.

the standings seem ridiculously close this year.

its 1/4 through the season and too early, but seeing the wings at the top and the leafs (almost) at the bottom is very nice indeed.

I think I heard on the radio yesterday that 30% of the games have ended in ties. That may have been just for this month not the whole season, or just for one of the two conferences. I joined that segment midway through. But it would explain some of the standings compression.

Great news, but goal differential is zero. 😬

I’m still not sure they’re that much better than last year. But it is an encouraging start in the standings. They’re 6th overall in the NHL although if they had lost in regulation last night they’d have been 16th overall. I still could see them finishing as high as 2nd in the Atlantic behind Florida or as low as 7th in the Atlantic ahead of Buffalo. At this point, my best guess would be low-mid 90s in points and squeaking out a wildcard spot.

Even worse for the Leafs (and better for us!) is that 14 of the Leafs’ 20 games have been at home and I believe only 4 were against teams that made the playoffs last year.

but a long standing problem for the Wings is that with this team 'lock down' is never far from becoming 'turtle' mode, meaning the goalie having to save the game single handedly.

The hater in me is loving this season from the Leafs so far.  I had a couple buddies who were acting like they were Cup bound with the moves they made.

Their GA is good, but part of that is Gibson and there is always the question of whether a goalie will sustain good play over a season. They still don't clear their zone well, but are doing better keeping the other team in safer places in our zone - so less SOG etc. I think the biggest question is how ASP and Danielson do. Are they going to sustain or grow or are they going to hit a rookie wall and have to be sent back to GR. If they don't have to dip back into weak depth to replace those two I'm optimistic. And I'd still rather see Solderblom playing than Rasmussen. At least Elmer makes enough plays you know his is on the team.
