Wings are in first place with a negative goal differential.   Can't see that being sustainable.

There are no great teams in the East this year. Only 3 teams in the conference have a better goal differential than +7.

Also, keep this in mind.   The Wings have 41 points.   15th place out of 16 teams is at 34 points. 

But there are some good signs.   The defense has been MUCH better in the last 6 games,  Two shutouts.   John Gibson has been a lot better (but still gives up some softies). 

Another positive is that they are getting scoring from someone other than Larkin lately 

Alex DeBrincat is now tied for 5th in goals with 20.  

They need to figure out what's going on with Kasper.

Oh definitely, he just didn't think the game well enough to effectively use his speed in my opinion.  Plus he always seemed on the lazier side but it could have just been him trying to process the game.

ASP flashed offensive instincts on that goal that we haven't seen from a defenseman here in a bit.

SY needs to make a deal for a solid 2nd pairing LHD as we do not have one anywhere in the system so far as i can tell.

I agree. They are finally near a turning point with the blue line corp. You have two excellent, one developing and one generally decent Dman. Get the third pair just to the point of "not outright bad" and that will be a big swing.

they could use either an upgrade on the third pair or a solid 2nd pair dman to allow chairot to drop to the third pair.

if that happens, they likely cure a lot of their defnesive woes, many of which stem from the black hole that is their third pair d.

the question is whether you give up a #1 pick for that, which is likely to be the going rate for such a defenseman.

I don't mind a #1 for a player that is at least average quality and has at least 5-7 good years left - that's a good return on a middle round #1 if you had the pick. But it's worth noting what we are talking about here can be achieved at a lot less cost than Hughes would have been.

Dom agrees that giving up edvinsson for a hughes without a hughes extension is too much.  he also says what we were all thinking: that the addition of buium made it so the wings couldnt match without including edvinsson.  the only wings alternative was asp and he's not as highly thought of as buium.  he also projects to have a lower value than edvinsson.  edvinsson now is projecting to a top pair defenseman.

seider is now projecting to be a norris candidate and maybe even a hall of famer.
