I am a bit spurned by HS pitchers and am not hung up if none of them signed so they can get cut up next spring and debut in the Pritzker administration.

We certainly have not had a whole lot of good luck with our HS pitcher draftees.

This is what I can find:

Perfect Game ranking of Dunwoody pre-draft (MLB Draft Reports: 100-199 | Perfect Game USA😞

167. Dustin Dunwoody, RHP, Royal HS
R-R, 6-2/185, Simi Valley, CA
College Commitment: USC

Dustin Dunwoody is a lanky right-hander with a mix of projection and present stuff. The fastball fits in the low-90’s, but has been up to 96 mph this spring. There is more velocity likely to come. The feel for the slider stands out. It is a firm offering with spin rates upwards of 2800 rpm. Dunwoody will flash a changeup as well, but can have inconsistent feel with it at times. The strikes have improved and will need to continue to do so in order for the profile to stick as a starter.

Detroit FREE PRESS: (See who the Detroit Tigers selected in Day 2 of the 2026 MLB Draft

Dunwoody is committed to playing at USC and is the No. 8 ranked pitching prospect out of California according to Perfect Game. He was the Ventura County Star's High School Baseball Player of the Year, putting up a 10-0 record with a 0.22 ERA over 64⅓ innings in 2026.

From Detroit Tigers website, on Jack Byers (Here are the Tigers' 2026 Draft picks)

Player to watch: Jack Byers, RHP

  • Round 18, Pick 546
  • Bats/throws: R/R
  • 6'3" 190#
  • School: Artesia High School (NM)
  • Calling Card: Byers is an Arizona commit with an easy, fluid delivery and the makings of a starter’s arsenal, including a low 90s fastball, changeup, cutter and curveball. He was a multi-sport athlete who was part of championship teams in football and basketball.
  • Quote: “Good projection arm, multi-sport athlete that pounds the strike zone.” – Conner

Yahoo Sports on Will Zielinski (Detroit Tigers 2026 MLB Draft Day 2 Recap: Rounds 5-20 - Yahoo Sports)

Detroit finished the draft in the 20th round with Will Zielinski, a right-hander from Vauxhall High School in Alberta. Zielinski brings spin traits, with a fastball that can touch the low-to-mid 90s and breaking-ball spin that gives him developmental appeal. Like several of Detroit's late prep selections, signing him may be the larger question.

Bless You Boys on all 3:

(Breaking down Detroit’s Day 2 picks in the 2026 MLB draft)

Round 15, Pick 456: RHP Dustin Dunwoody, Royal HS (CA)

The first high-school arm selected by Detroit this year is Dustin Dunwoody, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander ranked No. 199 overall in the 2026 high school class by Baseball America. The California native is committed to play at USC after switching from Arizona earlier this season. We’ll see if the Tigers have the bonus pool money to lock him up, but they should have a pretty good idea by now. This has certainly been a very different draft for them when the first prep arm arrives in round 15.

Dunwoody throws from a 3/4 to high 3/4 arm slot with a fastball in the low-90s but can touch 95-96 mph when he reaches back. There’s video of a 2-seam fastball with heavy run in upper-80s as well. He also has an 82-85 mph slider with spin between 2,700 and 2,900 rpm. He is developing a kick-change in the mid-80s, too.

Swing-and-miss ability on the slider is to be determined. He’s drawn plenty of whiffs at the prep level, but some scouts describe him as a thrower instead of a pitcher at the moment. That’s common for a prep pitcher and, depending on the cost, this looks like a really good bet as long as the Tigers actually ink him to a deal.

Round 17, Pick 515: RHP Jack Byers, Artesia HS (New Mexico)

Jack Byers is another high school arm off the board for Detroit, and a well-regarded one at that. He’s a three-sport state champion, which is incredibly hard to do, and holds a commitment to the University of Arizona.

Byers has an incredibly smooth delivery at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds and out of a 3/4 arm slot. He throws a low-90s fastball that can touch 93, a high-80s cutter, a low-80s curveball with good depth and a firm changeup that has splitter tendencies and low spin. His athleticism and advanced command give him a pretty good chance to develop the whole package, and he has the frame to add strength and velocity as he fills out.

Signability is always tough with these late-round picks, but it feels like Detroit has a better chance to woo him away from Arizona than it does with Dunwoody. Somehow landing both would be pretty miraculous.

Round 20, Pick 606: RHP Will Zielinski, Vauxhall HS (Alberta, CA)

It’s difficult to imagine signing Zielinski with the Tigers bonus pool limitations this season. The high school right-hander out of Alberta, Canada already has a really nice delivery form a prototypical high-three quarters slot.

Zielinski can really spin the baseball. Currently his velocity sits around 90 mph, touching 93-94 mph per report, but the fourseamer has nearly 2500 rpms on average. He mixes in a high spin curveball in the upper 70’s, and can really snap his 80 mph slider up to 3000 rpms and beyond.

The six-foot-three, 195 pounder has plenty of room to get stronger in his early 20’s. Again though, with this small bonus pool and several well regarded prep notables already drafted, it’s hard to believe they can sign him unless he’s highly motivated to skip college and start his pro career.

Yeah, tbh, I just did a mental random number generator of Presidential Candidates. Cutesy way of saying 2029.

Maybe...

A lot of the bonuses seem off.

Oh, yeah, I took a second look and everything is jumbled up or just plain off. Will Adams signed for $65K?

NOT.

Leblanc signed per Callis. I've got them $2,500 into the draft pick penalty, so I assume somebody had that number reported with that free $2,500 bonus included. Will Adams has a round number reported, so I assume that's it.

The big 4 to me are Flukey, Tyson LeBlanc, Evan Dempsey, Will Adams.

I believe those 4 have the talent/best chance at making it to MLB. IMO.

So yes, anything additional is gravy.

I'm guessing the minimum to sign Dunwoody or Byers would be at least $500K.

That they got LeBlanc to sign at over slot killed any last chance of that happening...

IMO.

And Baseball America even faked me out when they showed Dunwoody signed at $150K. Too shocking to be true.

And it was.

Edman was correct... I'm guessing BA was going through some software update or database update/ refresh and got all the numbers messed up, including Dunwoody. When Ed said 'go check again", I noticed Will Adams signed for $65K. Ummm... no.

So my guess is no chance for Dunwoody or Byers, unless we got to at least around $500K or so... So not signing was not unexpected.

Just my 2 cents.

For anyone distraught about us not signing the late round high school pitchers, at least we aren’t the Guardians who couldn’t sign their second rounder

Yet somehow the Guardians will continue to pump out legit new starters every year. Hate em but have a ton of respect for them

Yeah, either the kid changes his mind on what he would accept or someone really dropped the ball.
