I think they’d like to give it to someone else just because, and Pete has a higher WAR than Ohtani does, especially now that Ohtani is only hitting. By the way, I was at that game today and both Ohtani’s homers were total lasers—that first homer was a 20-degree line drive, just absurd—but Pete also hit one off the RF video board. Highly entertaining day, especially considering the Cubs almost pulled the same choke the Tigers did last Wednesday. I could just imagine Skubal in the dugout digging the idea of winning a game that was 1% in the eighth, after losing a 99% game in the seventh last week. Alas for him … Quote
tiger2022 Posted August 6 Posted August 6 I think they really are pushing Ohtani as the greatest player of all time and they need him to get closer to as many MVPs as Bonds has. And he's -130 on the betting sites and PCA is +100. Not that betting sites/companies have any say in what happens in sports these days. Quote
tiger2022 Posted August 6 Posted August 6 (edited) Also, he won't win the AL ROY, McGonigle deserves it, but Parker Messick is having a great season. I think pitchers get punished in ROY awards. Maybe they need a pitcher ROY award. Even if McGonigle was still in the minors they would give it to Murikami. Edited August 6 by tiger2022 Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted August 8 Posted August 8 (edited) I saw some ridiculous stat where the Red Sox have a .546 BABIP as a team during this stretch. Not sure if that’s true though Edited August 8 by monkeytargets39 Quote

Tiger337 Posted August 8 Posted August 8 2 hours ago, chasfh said: Is that all of it? The entirety of it? Maybe not the entirety, but I think it's a significant factor. There is luck involved in winning and losing close games, but I think the bullpen is the biggest tangible factor in the Tigers losing close games this year. I can't say that it's the biggest factor in the Red Sox winning close games though. That might be chalked up to luck. Quote

There is luck involved in winning and losing close games, but I think the bullpen is the biggest tangible factor in the Tigers losing close games this year. I can't say that it's the biggest factor in the Red Sox winning close games though. That might be chalked up to luck. So I looked into this a little bit. The difference between the Tigers and Red Sox are entirely in close games: Tigers are 5-9 in 1- and 2-run games; Red Sox are 13-1. In 3+-run games they are practically identical: DET 18-5; BOS 19-5. Bullpen results in the eighth inning have been a genuine problem. In the 7th-8th-9th innings, Tigers ERA has been 4.85-4.95-3.03 against xERA of 3.47-4.90-3.80; BOS ERA has been 4.18-1.95-2.70 against xERA of 3.97-4.01-3.52. So the Tigers ERA has been worse than expected for the 7th especially; same for the 8th; and better for the 9th. Red Sox ERA has been much better than expected in the 8th and 9th. Is that luck or not? Not sure. Tigers record when leading after six innings has been 21-5; normally a team would go 22.5-3.5, so we are 1.5 games to the bad on this. Red Sox has been 24-0; normally a team would be 20.7-3.3, so they have been +3.3 to the good. That's itself is an almost five game swing. And all this despite that after last night and as of this morning, we are basically tied with Boston on Pythag record: Team G RS Rank RA Rank Pythag Implied Actual Luck BOS 38 213 1 121 T1 .738 28-10 32-6 +4 DET 37 212 2 121 T1 .736 27-10 23-14 -4 So to me, it looks like bad bullpen outcomes in the later innings, as usual; and the combination of bad luck for us and good luck for the Sawx that their record during this period has been so much better than ours. NorthWoods Posted August 10 Posted August 10 On a topic discussed here: https://www.si.com/mlb/pitching-longevity-hits-all-time-low-verduccis-view Starters averaged 5.03 innings in July, the fewest ever in the month. The starters-relievers workload split this year is 57%-43%. Fifteen years ago, it was 65%-35%. No pitcher has thrown more than 120 pitches in almost a game—since Justin Verlander on Aug. 31, 2025. In 2011 there were 100 such games. 1 Quote
