Duren - I hope they at least let the market dictate he gets a max.  If they just give him one on July 1st, that will be dumb.  Plus, if he signs an offer sheet it will only be for 4 years instead of 5 and 5% annual raises instead of 8%.  So you save a bit.

Thompson - Can they get a team friendly extension?  What does that look like?  $30 million per?  I doubt his agent lets him sign that, but who knows.

Robinson - They can keep him for $15 million next year.  They can also pay him $2 million and cut him.  Even better would be moving him to a team looking to cut salary.  They could instantly save $13 million by trading for Robinson.  Problem is, do they have something to trade us that we want.

Harris - Defense isn't good, cant shoot, old.  I don't see why he comes back but if he does it has to be cheap and as a backup.

Their needs:  Starting PF and backup PF.  Shooting.  Secondary ball handler even if Jenkins has a good playoff.  A big that can shoot, maybe.

They really need to let the market dictate Duren's price. I don't think they will because "player relations", but they should.

Signing Ausar to a friendly contract this summer would be huge. His numbers are just going to get better as his minutes increase (they better increase) and he improves. But more than likely he's going to make an NBA All Defensive team and I'm guessing he won't sign for cheap.

I'd be happy with bringing Harris back as a backup PF. He's fallen off, but still a smart player, good in the locker room, and would be among the league's better bench players, imo. Depends on the cost though.

Their needs: To me, it's 2-way players. You can't keep running out guys like Robinson hoping he's hot enough from three to make up him getting targeted on defense every time down the court. Unless Ron or Ausar magically learn to shoot, they've got to replace Robinson and Harris with 3-and-D forwards.

Something I didn't mention in that post.  If the only move Detroit makes this summer is maxing Duren, they will be at $177 million in salary, or $11 million over the projected salary cap.

So if you want to spend the $16 million MLE on a free agent you're at $193 million.  Want to keep Harris?  Lets just toss out $10 million to keep him next year, which might be low.  But now you're at $203 million.  You want to keep Green?  Lets say another $7 million for him.  You are now at $210 million and that is where the 1st apron starts.

like i said a while ago: is cade/duren/ausar a championship core?  you'd have to fill the rest of the roster with cheap shooting.

because that's where they're going unless they let duren walk.

I believe in Santa Claus more than I believe the Pistons will be letting Duren walk.   They love him and 100% see him as a core piece.  He will be getting a max deal.  Any building of the future has to start with that fact.   We can all debate the merits of it but it’s 100% happening.

I'm more confident in Duren as a core piece than Ausar. Duren has made significant strides this year...Ausar seems like the same guy.  Elite defender...but otherwise...

His ballhandling is improving I think. His assists are up, TO's are down - but his shooting is going backward - with a significant drop in his FT %. A slasher that can't put away his free-throws is not the best combination.

Totally opposite for me.

You can replace 90% of what Duren gives you as a rim running big for half the price he's going to get and probably get better defense in the exchange. Sure, Duren does some extra stuff, but that 10% isn't the truly important stuff like running the offense, spacing the floor, or locking down the paint. Most of what he gives you relies on someone else feeding him.

On the other hand, Ausar is a top 1% athlete with defensive instincts and a high basketball IQ. That's rare. He completely bends the game (and the laws of physics) when he's in there and his on/off stats show it. The team is simply better on both ends of the court when he plays because he's a high level passer, cutter, and offensive rebounder who gives you easy buckets and extra possessions - and this team is entirely built on winning the possession game. Everyone's job gets easier when he's on the court.

JD's only 22, so maybe he learns to shoot the three someday and the narrative changes. But then again, maybe Ausar gets to 33% someday as well. Both are about as likely, but for now I'm keeping Ausar in my core over Duren all day.

I would pay Ausar before Duren, but I wouldn't give him a max deal either.  But a wing defender is much more valuable that a center that can't shoot.

Ausar can guard the other teams best offensive player about 95% of the time.  I think people really sleep on that skill.  He can guard Jalen Brunson to Luka and everyone in-between.  The few guys he can't guard are Victor or Jokic.  But other than SA and Denver, Ausar will guard every other title contenders best offensive player.

That isn't Hongbit's point.

Will LANGDON follow your advice? Or will he sign Duren to whatever the extension costs?

That was Hongbit's point.

The rest of your post was moot point in the context of what Trajan Langdon will actually do...

Right?

Right?

he wasnt responding to bonghit.

i think its inevitable that the pistons re-sign duren.  and i also think he's getting the max or close to it.  so is ausar.

its the easiest thing to do, so that's what will be done.

i think gores will pay over the tax.  spending money has never been his weakness.  his weakenss is vanity and his sister in law...
