Apart from Finnie (and the departed Soderblom), the only pick to have really outperformed his draft position is Seider at #6. Raymond and Edvinsson are both good picks but not much better if at all than what you’d expect from #4 and #6 overall. I think ASP still has potential to outperform #17 overall. Apart from that, jury is out to say the least.  Cossa (#15, 2021j is being passed, not only by Wallstedt but Montreal’s duo of Dobes (5th round, 2020) and Fowler (3rd round, 2023) and Toronto’s Hildeby (4th round, 2022). 

7th rounders are just luck.

the second round misses are huge.  if, in fact, they end up being misses.  still time for a few of them.  but not much time.

how's brady cleveland doing?  kiiskanen?  neiderbach?

I've often had the feeling in recent years that the Wings are a team where players come to get worse. So do they have really poor coaching and development people? I don't think TM is a bad NHL coach, but guys are not exactly blossoming under his coaching when they come up here either. Does Yzerman have a toxic philosophy about how to manage young players that has been enforced by him only hiring coaches that share the view and they are all just wrong?

An org that can't progress has to make changes if that is going to change. I get that there are a lot of reasons CI is going to be slow to fire SY, but I can at still hope Ilitch would at least tell Yzerman that it's time to turn over his staff if he wants to remain the guy in charge. They just are not accomplishing anything more than 'about average' and you can't get better with that FO performance level.

IDK, I always thought he at least made the other team aware he was on the ice, which is more than most RW forwards achieve. I would have liked to have seen them given him more run.

Yes, we have watched as the Lions acquire players with a plan for their development and then (in many cases) develop the players according to that plan. We have seen the Tigers appeal to players because their analytics team gives them strategies for improvement. Players on the Red Wings seem to be managed not to make mistakes. It seemed like TM was trying to break this trend after he arrived and maybe he still is by calling out players for their intensity. But I just don’t see any offensive creativity, spontaneity, or enthusiasm outside of Kane and Debrincat.

Oliver Kapanen, the last pick of the 2nd round (#64) by the Habs in 2021 (#36 Shai Buium and #70 Carter Mazur's draft) scored the winner in the shootout tonight to get Montreal to 100 points on the season. He has 22G 15A 37Pts in 76 games, most goals by the rookie in the NHL this year.

yeah, but does he try hard and play two way hockey as a 17 year old?  that's what's REALLY important.

of late...Drafting in the 2nd rd and beyond seems to be yielding more potential results...Augustine, Plante, Genborg...Dylan James looks like a potentiial bottom six fwd.  Some other guys like Keenan, Soloman and Anton Johansson are generating some buzz.

none of those players has contributed one whit yet.  youre right, they might.

however, i will also remind everyone of the hype surrounding most wings nhl prospects....

...until they get to the AHL.  and a select few who actually get to the nhl.  for the most part, they havent done ****.  that includes asp, mbn, danielson, and kasper (other than for two months when he was playing with healthy larkin).

Plus almost every team in the NHL has a handful of prospects the most devoted segments of their fanbase are hyped up about. No reason to think the Wings’ prospect pool today is any better than average.

Even the Leafs, without high picks and with dysfunctional management, found Matthew Knies (64 points this year so far) at #57 in 2021, drafted 17 goal scorer (albeit for Boston) Fraser Minten at  #38 in 2022, has got 19 games this season at a .912 save % from 2022 4th rounder Dennis Hildeby, and 2023 #28 Easton Cowan drafted 19 spots after Danielson has played 61 games for the Leafs this season. 
 

If it’s not mediocre drafting on the Wings’ part then it is mediocre development.n

We are facing, right now, in this game:

Brock Faber, RHD, 23, drafted 2nd round #45 (I didn't look up how Minny got this pick from LA...) in the 2020 draft. This is his 3rd full year in the NHL. 2 games, 82, 78, 77 this year (with today's game).

6' 1" 210 #'s, 51 points this year in 77 games (that includes this game)... +22.

We had (3) 2nd rounders that year and (2) 3rds (Lucas Raymond draft):

#32 William Wallinder, 51 Niederbach, 55 Cross Hanas, #63 (3rd round) Donovan Sebrango, 70 Eemil Viro...

 

Draft is a crapshoot, I know.... Just sayin'
