Tiger337 Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago Sparky Anderson after Brogna was traded:"He's got a chance to be a good one some day, but I didn't want to wait to find out". Quote
Tiger337 Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago (edited) Brogna was traded for Alan Zinter. I remember having an argument on the AOL board with one of the dumbest baseball fans on the internet. He said that Tony Clark was going to be another Alan Zinter. I told him that Zinter was never a good prospect and was nothing like Clark. He got really upset telling me I knew nothing about baseball and to get my head out of the spreadsheets. He assured me that Zinter was a stud prospect who flamed out. The same guy once told me that Brookens was a good hitter because he was clutch. That pretty much summed up my early days on social media. This guy was a high school teacher from Ohio. 😀 Edited 13 hours ago by Tiger337 1 Quote

That’s why we had an entire generation who thought wins were an important pitcher statistic. It directly correlates to the decline of this country. Edited 12 hours ago by monkeytargets39 1 Quote

When I hear commentators, especially on national broadcasts, gushing about who is hitting in the “three spot” or batting “cleanup” even a generally emotional fan as myself has to roll his eyes and wonder if they’ve been paying attention to what’s been going on in analytics for the last 25 to 30 years. Much like left handed relief pitchers, if you can hit 20 hr you keep getting chances. Zinter spent 13 yrs in AAA with an overall 838 OPS. A worthy nominee for the Mike Hessman association. Quote

Brogna had a couple of decent years with the Mets in 94-95, but was below replacement level after that. Quote

Joe Sr arranged for some dude with the same name as his opponent to also be on the ballot, splitting that vote even further. The grandson of the former mayor of Boston and son of a wealthy, if disgraced somewhat, ambassador didn't need much help winning a seat. His campaign would announce fundraising opportunities and send them out to all the single women in town with the promise that the rich young eligible bachelor may show up... thus all the mothers of these women would push their daughters to go in the hopes of finding a husband. IdahoBert Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago I remember when JFK was shot there was this strange hubub in the halls as all the teachers left their classrooms and they were hugging each other and crying and then our teacher Mrs. Vaughn returned from the hallway choking back the tears and told us all to leave and that the President had been shot dead and school was canceled for a few days. 1 Quote

It was such a different era. Today it would be like: "Oh- someone shot the President? Hmmm. Well, on to lesson II" The other funny thing to contemplate is whether anyone would be crying in the hall if it had been Nixon. Even if you had voted for RMN, it's hard to imagine having much emotional investment in him! 🤷♂️ Quote
IdahoBert Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago As children we were just stunned and none of us were crying because it was just unbelievable and it was hard for us to process, and I don’t think any of us had much investment in his persona as the adults might. I do remember they brought TVs into all the classrooms for his inauguration and it was pretty impressive. He definitely had a lot of charisma or an aura about him that even children could pick up on.
