Cruzer1 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 (edited) I think the Wings can replace Larkin at Center with Raymond, and move some young wingers up, like MBN. They have to get creative. Edited June 26 by Cruzer1 Quote

We all saw what Brady Tkachuk just went for. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a young, up-and-coming team like a Buffalo or San Jose to part with a top 5 pick for Larkin or DeBrincat. Quote

The Wings only picked in the top 25 overall twice between 1999-2012. Then he nabbed Mantha and Larkin as mid 1st rounders in 2013-2014, that’s punching above your weight. 2015-2018? Yeah, blech. I wouldn't say his 1998-2014 drafting was astoundingly good. He got nobody from 99, 01, 06, 07, 11, so a third of those drafts. He drafted a few standouts and a few respectable players. It is true that in many of these years he did not have first round picks, but we see what happened when he did. Yzerman's first five drafts have produced seven NHL regulars, including a defenseman who got Norris Trophy votes, another first-pair defenseman, and a first-line forward. This does not include players like ASP, Mazur, Anton Johansson, Sebastian Cossa, Trey Augustine, and MBN who will inevitably become NHL regulars, and other players like Nate Danielson, Carter Bear, Max Plante, and Eddie Genborg who are likely to. Yzerman has not been perfect, but it is not out of the question that Yzerman might produce as much NHL talent out of his first seven drafts as Holland produced in his whole tenure. Quote
Cruzer1 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 You can add Postava, who wasn't drafted, but signed by the Wings. His future looks bright. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 77 minutes. If something is happening pre-draft they're cutting it pretty close. Quote

We'll see. Of those ten, I'd say the over under as to how many will become NHL regulars (as I'm arbitrarily defining as 250 career games, 125 career goalie starts) is 3 or 4. Quote

buddha Posted June 26 Posted June 26 peterka to boston for two first rounders. maybe they want to accumulate picks for larkin! Quote

I'm assuming Dbc is gone if Larkin is. Another is to move Kasper or Danielson to the 1st line. Quote
Cruzer1 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 And the later the draft gets, the less of a chance any Wings trade gets done today. Quote

Nobody from ‘99 except some guy named Zetterberg in the 7th round 🙂 Except for Yzerman’s three top 6 overall picks, all of his other picks have either washed out, are bottom-half NHLers (AlJo, Soderblom, Finnie, and sorry but Kasper too for now) or are still prospects. The jury’s out. Hey, I hope all or many or even some of the plenty of names in the system with potential pan out, but we just don’t know. Far from certain for example that Cossa or Augustine will have a better NHL career than Holland’s 5th rounder, Petr Mrazek. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 So now we know, Yzerman is sticking to the grind it out plan. /...sigh.../ Quote

Touché, but again he and Datsyuk were Hakan Andersson picks when very little scouting was being done in Europe. Andersson says he thinks he was the only scout who saw Datsyuk play. Back to my earlier point, Holland benefited from that (un)competitive environment in which the Wings had massive edges in European scouting and free agent dollars. Since those advantages disappeared, Holland and the Wings as a franchise have not figured out how to compete. It is true that prospects may not pan out but the ones I listed are likely to be at least replacement level NHL players. Iyer thinks so too. “…they have a plethora of players that project to play in the middle-six such as JP Hurlbert, Marco Kasper, Carter Bear, Max Plante, Eddie Genborg in addition to the aforementioned Danielson, Mazur, Brandsegg-Nygård. They have an elite goaltending prospect in Trey Augustine. The best part is all of these guys project to play NHL minutes in the next three years. The Wings have a legitimate core - they’re just missing the head of the dragon.” I’m not defending Yzerman BTW (who has me concerned after not trading Larkin at the draft and after the press conference). I’m pointing out that it was inevitable that it would take a long, long time to rebuild a prospect base after Holland bottomed out the franchise. Quote
Jason_R Posted June 28 Posted June 28 Stevie has the opportunity to do a very funny thing... Edvinsson, Faulk, a forward prospect, and next year's first for Werenski? "Dylan, I refuse your trade request, but I hope you're happy. Now buy a billboard, apologize to the city of Detroit, and put this 'A' on your sweater." Quote

It’s funny but this move would close to the best possible thing that could happen. Bring back the same group that got close last year but add the current Norris Trophy winner. They are a likely playoff team instead of embarking on another rebuild. Stevie would go from goat to hero very quickly. Quote

They'd have to learn to play inside-out - which I've felt they haven't done as much as they already should have been doing with Seider and Edvinsson. Also just curious - I haven't listened to Yzerman after the draft - has Yzerman or Larkin yet said anything in public to acknowledge any part of the story, or does the story still stand as a series uncontradicted leaks? At the draft they did a presser where Stevie acknowledged the trade request and said he had told the agent there was no guarantee it could or would be met. He also said he wasn’t going to answer questions about it that day but maybe around free agency. Quote
