Motown Bombers Posted July 24 Posted July 24 19 minutes ago, Mr.TaterSalad said: Bernie wasn't the nominee. Though the polling showed he polled better against Trump than Hillary had he been the nominee. Democrats have run center (Carter, Mondale, Kerry, Dukakis, Obama, H.Clinton), center-right (B. Clinton, Gore), and at best center-left (Biden) nominees since the McGovern campaign in 72. I say McGovern, because he was the last true progressive-ish candidate Democrats ran for the White House. Running these center and center right candidates, Democrats have lost with more of than they've won. Democrats have a record of 6-7 and below .500 winning percentage. The one time since McGovern they run someone remotely center-left in Joe Biden they actually won. Many progressive policies, populism, and rallying against the status quo (which progressives often do) is popular in this country. It is especially popular when the economy is the top issue on voters minds. Bernie wasn't the nominee because he lost by 10 million votes to Biden. If it was so popular in this country, Saint Bernard and Warren wouldn't get their doors blown off when they run outside of somewhere than the bluest states in the country. Biden beat Sanders because he ran a moderate campaign and governed to the left. We got a progressive in office and progressives turned around and literally ran a campaign against him urging Democrats not to vote for him. Also keep in mind Gore and Hillary both won the popular vote. The majority of the country wanted them. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I would split the components here. I think in the current mood a dem can be pretty progressive on economic issues, but they simply have to hew back toward the center on cultural issues. If the Dems let themselves be cast as lecturers of an 'unenlightened' general public about things like Parental rights, LatinX and pronoun use they will be doomed again. Quote

Joe needed to figure out a way to kneecap whatever the hell was happening in the undecided/anti-middle position. But, as my son who was my dungeon master after I taught him how to do that corrected me very strongly when I told him that my character was going to "fashion a means to climb a wall". "HOW ARE YOU GOING TO "FASHION" THAT? The kid is allright. Quote

He canceled student debt which was highly unpopular and yet they said it wasn't enough. He made the largest investment in climate change ever but the squad made symbolic no votes and complained it was never enough. The thing is, we're past the point of progressive policy. It's self preservation. Because so many self proclaimed progressives sat out in 2016, we are stuck with a Supreme Court that will strike down Medicare for All or any other leftist fantasy. Quote

LatinX was the dumbest thing ever. A bunch of white people telling Latinos their language is wrong. Quote

The far left need Trump because they are acclerationalists for the conditions that will make people need true Revolution. Actually doing the blocking and tackling of democracy doesn't interest that sort of person. I am willing to believe that some in the DSA actually follow that plan. I can't yet see that from AOC but she's def a fellow-traveler of those folks. Quote
