The best thing about McGonigle so far is that he really hasn't had a slump.  He seems to be able to make adjustments on the fly.

Power seems to be coming on, too.

21 years old and people on this board are already claiming hall of fame for him.  Dang.  A lot can happen after 21...just saying.  They last future hall of famer at his age was Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday.

They were handicapped by those names.  All American Kevin isn't carrying that weight.

Dillon Dingler might have a problem though.

2 weeks away, should be an interesting 2 weeks. Personally, I am good with either buying or selling, or a little bit of both but what they can't do is hold. You either have to go all in and address your weaknesses if you keep Skubal and everyone or you trade him and then Mize potentially being hurt throws a little fly in that ointment but I could see him or Flaherty moved as well if we do decide to sell. If they do a little of column A and column B, IE keep Mize Flaherty but trade Skubal I could be OK with that assuming we add elsewhere as well.

If McGonigle has the same power this year as he  had in A+/AA last year, coupled with his other stats, he would have the inside track on the AL MVP right now.

Don't underestimate the young lad, he'll read this and pick up the pace.   He likes pleasing the fans, you included.

Ohtani had been shut down (from pitching). Maybe the Dodgers will want Skubal even more? Did the Tigers price just go up? Stay tuned...

Same thought occurred to me, maybe 3 outfielders now.......

Oh I disagree! Dingler has a children's story hero vibe to it. Even better than the Electric Company's "Adventures of Letterman" - "able to scale a capital T in a single bound!" Detroit's darling Dillon Dingler dazzles and destroys those Damn Dodgers!!!

That got a little weird.

So if the Tigers extend Mize and Skubal, they wouldn't have to worry about payroll and draft seeding. That way we could trade for some talent at the deadline. Yeah, just a thought...

Trading for talent at the deadline would have to be the discrete first thing.

I don't see it happening but I'm just throwing it out there as un unlikely option.

That’s the Lions model. Draft well and retain.  Tigers got the first part correct.

It's much easier drafting well with multiple very early picks awarded because of 100 loss seasons. Avila's guys hit on some picks but nobody as good as McGonigle. And the cost of retaining talent in MLB without a salary cap is incredibly difficult. Especially with someone like Skubal who seems to want to set a new going rate for all players.

It’s possible that Chris has tried on his dad’s pants and liked the fit well enough that he’s already effectively committed to Boras that he’s gonna do what it takes to keep Skubal in Detroit.

I’ve mentioned this before, maybe not here, but the last few weeks in Ilitch-controlled sports franchises have been out of the ordinary. He fired yzerman because of another rebuild on the horizon. Skubal is dropping quotes in the media about not wanting to be traded. Guys like Buster Olney and Bob Nightengale have done a complete 180 on “what the tigers have to do” and it coincided with Skubal’s comments. We know that Boras uses direct connections with ownership and uses the national media to manipulate the market.

This to me suggests that Chris has maybe had enough and is ready to be more aggressive than he has been. Sick of the process and austerity.

Adding salary at the deadline, or even simply not cutting enough salary, would be another data point. But I think that decision would have to be informed by current/prior knowledge of what the offseason plans are going to be.

It's possible, I guess, although if Harris doesn't get his say in about the risks of committing too many years to a great pitcher with an injury history and who's turning 30 next year, he'll be derelict in his duty.

Boras is a very savvy guy so I have no doubt what you're saying is happening.

Competing headlines out there.  Jeff Passan has us trading Skubal and ESPN's Alden Gonzalez has us keeping him if we stay in the race.

the old adage about opinions applies

plus, we are one of the franchises that don't meet the national rhetorical threshold

Opinions are like noses....everyone has one. 😆

Whether in the race or not, I still think it comes down to the haul. If Harris gets blown away with a trade I think he takes it. If the offers are a top 100 plus 2 mid tier, I believe he stays
