As a kid I wore out The Year of the Tiger '68 LP. At the 5:57 mark Ray calls Kaline's 307th homer which passed Hank Greenberg as the all-time Tigers' HR leader and at the 22:37 mark Ray calls a Gates Brown extra inning walkoff homer.
While the clubhouse celebration seems like a bit of overkill, it could be really good for the team. Release the pressure and give them a fresh start for the new season on Tuesday.
Relieved as much as happy. No matter what else happens this season, at least the Tigers have managed to maintain a shred of dignity. Blowing the division AND missing the playoffs altogether could have taken years to live down.
Despite what the shirts say, I don’t think “October baseball” is ensured for any of the wildcard round teams. Losers in two games would be done by Tuesday night September 30, no?
Funnily enough, there is still a chance the Tigers-Astros could meet in wildcard round. Would happen if Detroit and Houston win their last two and Cleveland loses their last two. Houston would have a long way to fly tomorrow from LA to Detroit.
I like Bobby Scales. He played in the minors, majors and Japan and also has front office experience. Has some good thoughts. He is enthusiastic. I still thinks he talks too fast for radio, but either he is getting better or I am getting used to him.
