Haven't the Tigers paid him the last two years not to pitch ? Why are they the bad guys ? And I doubt they need to spend one nickel in arb prep. "We came to our number because Mr. Mize has not pitched the last two years and we paid his salary and medical bills during that time and are still giving him a raise during bad economic conditions".
I read ( Bowden ? ) that foreign players in the Japan league hit a combined .800 OPS against him for his career. Perhaps that plus his size discouraged more teams than was publicized ?
If you command the strike zone you should know when to hack. Maybe Mallory’s obp will fall and his slugging increase ? 250-325-475 works as stated by 337 earlier. And better 😊
The desperate SF Giants will probably prevent any Chapman discount and Boras has already played that with the overpay for Jung Ho Lee. Doubt we are in play. Still waiting for Harris' "calculated risk " unless it was taking Clark over Langford last draft.
So Lynn Henning has an article up in the News listing the Tigers top 50 prospects. If he is remotely accurate we have a powerhouse in the making. Now for those here who I believe do know I ask "can it be true " ? Can he be correct ?
What about Justin Turner dice roll. He can DH play a little third and first and won’t cost too much for one year so he doesn’t have to play every day. Just to provide depth. ??
I am optimistic because the pitching staff has depth, we have strong defenders up the middle, a leadoff man who can get on base, a low $ payroll that can be added to if opportunity arises and we play in weak division.
Listening to Harris it seems Shelby Miller will have every opportunity to close. It seems to be him or Lange based on control with Foley as back up but he doesn't have the strike out pitch most closers posses.
Is it possible we just signed a good closer for 3 million a year ? What a coup that would be.
Ditching cable for me saved $ but more importantly saved time. But cost is not that bad for even cable when you consider the high cost of attending games. So to each their own I guess.
Japan uses a six man rotation FWIW. Maybe they know something we don’t. In any case MLB is headed that way and needs to allow 14 man pitching staffs and 27 man rosters. MLB needs to protect pitchers, especially starters, like the NFL does quarterbacks. All games are promoted as Starter v Starter so it’s vital to keep them healthy.
That sounds like a good plan for Mize. However I am curious how the other 5 staters(Skubal-Flahtery-Maeda-Manning-Olen) fit in ? Are we thinking one in the minors, piggy back or six man rotation and with the latter two is a seven man bullpen sufficient ?
Yes I don’t think we should expect much from Mize next year. First year back from two surgeries and two years from any innings pitched. It will be a challenge to get him a consistent spot when the upside is what 100 innings?
