What about Justin Turner dice roll. He can DH play a little third and first and won’t cost too much for one year so he doesn’t have to play every day. Just to provide depth. ??

I am optimistic because the pitching staff has depth, we have strong defenders up the middle, a leadoff man who can get on base, a low $ payroll that can be added to if opportunity arises and we play in weak division.

Listening to Harris it seems Shelby Miller will have every opportunity to close. It seems to be him or Lange based on control with Foley as back up but he doesn't have the strike out pitch most closers posses. Is it possible we just signed a good closer for 3 million a year ? What a coup that would be.

Japan uses a six man rotation FWIW. Maybe they know something we don’t. In any case MLB is headed that way and needs to allow 14 man pitching staffs and 27 man rosters. MLB needs to protect pitchers, especially starters, like the NFL does quarterbacks. All games are promoted as Starter v Starter so it’s vital to keep them healthy.

That sounds like a good plan for Mize. However I am curious how the other 5 staters(Skubal-Flahtery-Maeda-Manning-Olen) fit in ? Are we thinking one in the minors, piggy back or six man rotation and with the latter two is a seven man bullpen sufficient ?

Yes I don’t think we should expect much from Mize next year. First year back from two surgeries and two years from any innings pitched. It will be a challenge to get him a consistent spot when the upside is what 100 innings?

The Flahtery signing will prove very beneficial. As it stands now he has the most innings from 2023 of all our starters and we need innings badly. Plus it’s his second year from injury and a springboard to free agency at 29. He will be gone after 2024 so we can pitch him to death next year. He is essentially our mercenary for 2024. Good match and he should do well.

I will also go with door # 3 because Friedman also thought he would agree. Harris and Friedman certainly covered their bases I would think. I agree that Manning could have decent trade value in this market for teams that need pitching but either don't spend ( Orioles ) or tight budget (Padres). We need a lefty starter (Imanga) and if obtained one we could trade Manning or even Madden/Flores if the return is right. I could see Rodgers traded this week as well since catchers are hard to get. Of course we need him also but for the right return it could be considered. They did retain Kelly and might value him higher than we think. This is the first winter meetings in ages that we have money to spend and assets of value to trade. It could be a huge few days in shaping our team for 2024. Go BIG Scot.
