Week One: Los Angeles Rams (0-0) @ Detroit Lions (0-0)
buddha replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
i didnt think that was impressive. a win is a win in the nfl so we'll take it but it wasnt impressive. they had the same problems as last year: couldnt get to the qb and couldnt cover. that rams team was not a "playoff team." they lost both starting tackles, their starting guard, and then their backup tackle. plus nakua got hurt in the first half. stafford showed what a great qb he is. just like when he played for detroit he made chicken salad out of chicken ****... ...and lost. the offense was out of sync. goff didnt play particularly well and no one but jamo could get open. and the rams were playing without their starting corners too. perhaps they are rusty because they didnt play in the preseason? hope so. the rams front isnt that bad, so it was nice to see the lions all over them in the run game even if goff did get some pressure. the nfl is a week to week league. they have time to get a third receiver up and running from the practice squad. that should open things up a bit. turn the page and beat the bucs. -

they dont have a qb. they have one good receiver and he's a tight end. their oline hasnt developed and theyre starting 3* nobodies for some reason. theyre going to be 7-5. -

yup. moore will be gone in 4 years. maybe by then another jim harbaugh will fall in their laps? cause that's the only way they've been able to have any sustained success in the last 15 years. -

Not a good trend for a small defenseman.

ok. DD's genius was identifying major league talent and dealing marginal minor league talent to get it. if harria can do that, they should be good to go next year. unfortunately there is still a ton of avila-detritus still around. it will take a while to get rid of that before they can become a great team again. that said, i still think they have a shot this year to make it, and that's with only one starting pitcher worth a darn. its been a masterful aj hinch performance this year.

they need to go 12-11 in their remaining games to not break the mets' record for 120 losses in a season. theyre more likely to lose 130 games. this has been the best white sox season i can remember in a very long time.

i feel like the system is much deeper and better off than it has been in a long time. keep singing lorenzen's and flaherty's to one year prove it deals and then trade them for prospects. that's how you build a system.

anyway, back to this year's michigan team. sure looks like they have some problems! oline was bad. will johnson was bad. the recievers were bad. the qbs cant throw downfield. wink called a really good game. they were blitzing all over the place and mostly successful when they did. the d ends looked good too. mullings looked good. edwards looked bad (huh, its almost like he had trouble identifying running lanes...who knew?). loveland looked great. guidice got replaced but settled down a bit in the second half. jyaire hill looked good to me. none of us are at practices, and maybe theyre hiding things before texas, but when your best oline recruits are benched in favor of low level guys, its usually not a good sign. and it wasnt good last night. none of that matters without a qb. and they dont have a qb (although orji looks like he could be denard-lite if they let him). looks like we'll be scouting the portal for qbs next year. we dont really know what fresno state will be. maybe they are a really good mid major team? likely not, but maybe. we'll find out what michigan is next saturday. if they play like they did today its not going to be pretty. -

you let your dislike for him cloud your opinion of his ability. how did urban meyer do in the pros? nick saban? how about jim harbaugh? you cite andrew luck but make no mention of alex smith and colin kapernick? no coach wins without talent. how is bill belichick doing without tom brady? -

jim harbaugh won a national championship, took a team to the super bowl in year 2 (with alex smith and colin kapernick as qb), and made STANFORD a powerhouse. i know you have something against him personally, but he's one of the best football coaches alive. -

romad, they dont have a qb. theyre not winning many games if they can dominate up front. and theyre being dominated by fresno state. will johnson hurt already. -

but the playcalling has been atrocious. in fairness, they dont have a qb. kind of hard to fun an offense without a qb and an offensive line. -

i'm more worried about sherrone moore. youre replacing one of the best coaches in football with a guy who has been an assistsnt for a couple years and no head coaching experience to speak of (yeah yeah, four games last year with a stacked team and harbaugh doing the coaching all week). not exactly the resume i want for a guy to lead a top 10 program. they didnt have much choice, but i think it might be the beginning of a downturn fpr michigan. -

that's the guy you picked to be your starting center? the one who just got pushed by 5 yards by...checks notes....fresno state? oh boy this does not look good. -

if he had done that consistently for the last two years he would be in the pros right now. but he didnt. let's see if the holes are there this year.
