he instituted advances in detroit's system YEARS after other organizations had done it. that's not a mark of success in my eyes. and let's not forget, avila was a top exec in the previous org who disdained such advances. and avila himself, upon taking control of the org, did not immediately implement changes and instead kept the same old fashioned regime in place for years. he was kept in his job because chris illitch didnt know any better and it was the easiest solution. and he proved ALL of us doubters right by failing to make the organization better when they were good (jordan zimmerman? mark lowe?) and then failing to capitalize on the organization's assets to make them better long term (the best return they received for the best hitter on the market and a generational pitcher is jake freaking rogers. a back up catcher.) so yes, his STINK is still being excised by this organization. and yes, if he got one right, it is mitigated by the 10 he got wrong. he is a failure as a gm and he set the tigers back a decade, and your obsessive love for every tigers prospect no matter how middling they may be will not change the results.

whatever word you want to use. you've extolled the virtues of al avila repeatedly, and said he laid the foundation for the next great detroit team. and so far, you have been wrong. you should own it instead of splitting hairs about "genius" and "1970s prospects and not 1980s team dominance."

i dont see how you can give him credit for starting things years after other teams have done it. like it waa a good thing. he was a day late and a dollar short. not every individual move was bad, but collectively they were awful. he never rebounded from his initial terrible free agent signings and inability to get a good return for the stars on the team. he was the worst gm since randy smith and led the tigers through the worst period in franchise history. his parting gift to us is the worst offensive regular player in mlb. he was a complete failure.

youre also the one who said this group of avila prospects was going to return us to 1984 type glory. no offense. i'm really at a loss as to how anyone can reasonably look at the state of the tigers for the last 8 years and say "hey, that guy did a really good job with them."

i doubt it. i dont follow the baseball draft as much as the other sports. i do remember liking nick madrigal a lot and that hasnt worked out very well. but i am not a baseball gm. i am not saying that they should listen to me. i am saying his picks have not panned out yet and, as such, have not been good picks. that's what he was paid to do and he wasnt very good at it.

i like it better than the parker meadows, kody clemens, kingston liniak, adam wolf, hugh smith, eric de la rosa, and jeremiah burks picks.

your scouts and general managers are paid to make those decisions and not go by what's in the press. so far, mize and tork have been massive failures. however, its still very early in their careers and plenty of time to turn it around. but the "lolz everyone said they were top prospects so the fact that they didnt pan out isnt a black mark on the people who drafted them" argument doesnt fly with me. the people who drafted them are supposed to know more than keith law or baseball america. its a results based business. if they fail, the people who drafted them fail.

i love the idea of adding monk in free agency. i loved it years ago when weaver was intent on collecting failed big men or using cap space on joe harris. now monk will be expensive. a good organization would have identified monk (or divencenzo) as potential contributors years ago. a good organization would identify that type of under-the-radar player this year. THIS organization trades assets for james wiseman. which is why the only real acquisition that matters this year is the president of basketball operations. weaver simply must be replaced.
