from cory in the athletic today:
one year later, it is still too early to make a definitive conclusion. Player development is a long arc and rarely is it completely linear. But the results do not yet validate the Tigers’ decision to draft Jobe. In his first 40 2/3 professional innings (all at Low-A Lakeland) Jobe has a 5.09 ERA. He is averaging a respectable 9.52 strikeouts per nine innings but also has a 3.98 BB/9.
Scouts do not doubt Jobe’s talent. He still has the ceiling of a frontline MLB starter. The slider is real and averages over 3,000 rpm. But, per multiple observers, the level of command and polish hasn’t been quite as advertised. His fastball, though it can touch the upper 90s, has averaged closer to 94 mph. He’s a 19-year-old pitcher with a lot left to learn.
