Al Avila isn’t going to dump a bundle on anyone. This off-season is going to be very interesting.

Tigers GM Al Avila on free agency: "I would caution you: This is not going to be spending like a drunken sailor. This is going to be a very measured process." I don’t want the organization to spend like a “drunken sailor.” That’s what got them in the mess they’ve been in for several years. We’ll see how sharp Al’s acumen is for ROI going forward. I sincerely hope he is successful for everyone’s sake. I fully expect the Tigers to compete for the playoffs beginning in spring training. It’s all yours Al. Make it happen.

The Lolich/Freehan battery holds the most games started in MLB at 324. With Wainwright and Molina signing on for one more year there is a good chance that the record might be broken. I believe the Wainwright/Molina combination is 304-305? I know they were at 300 the first week of September.

The only team that I would pull for in the AL is the Rays. I do think it’s cool seeing two of the old school guys managing AL teams-Baker and LaRussa. Pulling for Cards in the NL until they’re out and from that point on I’m for San Fran. Unlike the AL, I don’t have a deep dislike of any of the NL teams in the playoffs.

Is it spring training yet?

I enjoy Petry in the booth. I don’t know that he would have any interest in the job full time. If that opportunity arose, I would hope he would take it.

To my knowledge nothing has been announced one way or another. Mike Shannon, another 1968 World Series participant, is retiring from the booth this year. The Cardinals did a nice pregame ceremony for him today.

The idea is to give an appearance of fairness across the board on the final day of the season. A certain World Series Championship trophy sitting in Houston pretty much speaks for what Manfred and company accept as fairness.

I’m sure Manfred and his minions are delighted with how the way the final day of the season (or beyond) will play out. In essence, the playoffs start today for several teams.

All in for the Rays in the AL. Anything after the Rays I don’t care as I despise the rest of the teams. In the NL, I’m for the Cardinals.

The SF/LA race is pretty impressive in that it is for a division win, not a wildcard spot.

I would love to see Nick in a Tiger uniform again but I don’t know that he’d have any desire to come back to Detroit, all else being even. Your above comment was totally applicable two years ago as well.

This is exactly where I am and have been for more than a year. Avila hasn’t hasn’t proven jack to me to this point. “The pressure is now very high for Avila” is the big truth now. To repeat myself, Avila is going to have to be a real GM going forward, not just some guy that has the top picks in every draft for the last two or three years and sits by watching the big tank-big difference. I hope he proves me wrong but I am not sold on his ability to outmaneuver other GM’s for talent and money. True, very interesting off-season coming up.

We managed to get up there for a 1991 series with the Yankees and in 1999 we came up for a series with Boston. I loved that old park. It was a physical history of the Detroit Tigers.

Under the Chris Illitch regime, the D on the Tigers hat was three different sizes over three consecutive years, 2018-2020. The total cluster was the billboard sized D on the 2019 hat. I’m OK with the font change on the D on the home jersey chest a couple of years ago. I would prefer it were a tad smaller though. This year several teams have introduced their “City Connect” uniforms. I haven’t seen one I like yet. The Dodgers CC uniforms are terrible in my opinion. I fear the day, and it is coming, when the Tigers roll out theirs. I’m sure it will be another dud. I would think with the word, DETROIT, across the chest you could go a long way in connecting the city with the team…but that’s just me.
