I remember thinking this was a pretty conservative board at one point. I tend to be liberal, but I don't support any party and am not very knowledgeable about politics, so I didn't comment much back then. Three things happened when Trump came along: (1) Some of the smarter conservatives left because Trump is a nut job and a fraud and not really a conservative but rather an egomaniac who is incapable of thinking beyond himself. They couldn't defend him and they still disliked the other side, so there was nothing left for them, (2) A few people started becoming more liberal for various reasons (3) Most of the conservatives who actually supported Trump were just trolls who didn't contribute anything. Thus they were chased away. I think if the Republican party drops Trump and gets back to talking serious issues again, you'll see some conservatives return and there might be good debates again.

yeah, I know there are some good fans who expressed surprise. I just think the Tigers have been so terrible for so long, we have forgotten what a real ball player is!

Personally, I never considered him to be anything other than what he is.

It is amazing how much discussion there about Reyes all over the place. He is just a fifth outfielder and fans are talking like this trancation is a big deal.

Jeff Passan is like Jason Beck. He's been around forever and still looks like a college Sophomore blogger.

I believe there is a good chance. He seems to fit in with the kind of staff Harris has been putting together.

Andy Ibanez sounds like an another Castro, but you've got to love that he has not one but two accents in his name - accents grave and tilde.

I was not expecting Reyes back next year, so it's not a big surprise. He is OK as a bench player, but he doesn't seem like the kind of player that Harris has been talking about. He has no plus skills and he's no longer at an age where you'd expect him to develop any.

Marjorie Taylor Greene? I know someone who likes her, but I think that's because he is a big time body builder. I know of smart people who like Trump, but I don't know of any smart people that are into conspiracy theories. I suppose they are out there. I don't really care about the politics of the Tigers front office though.

Dale Murphy and Don Mattingly were the opposite of Whitaker. Murphy won two MVPs and Mattingly won one MVP and finished 2nd another year. Both had short careers. Whitaker never came close to an MVP, but had as many good years as almost any player ever. It's really remarkable how many good years he had without ever being great. I saw a stat yesterday from B-Refs Stathead expert Adam Darowski showing that Whitaker finished between 3 and 7 WAR more times than any player in the history of the game, but never finished above 7. He may have been a compiler but he was the best compiler ever! I think McGriff might get in, but I don't know that he deserves it. He was in the Whitaker mold of always being good but never being great, but Whitaker was better overall.

Four best Tigers: Cobb Kaline Gehringer Greenberg I often think of the Mt Rushmore question as best players from different eras. So, I might drop Greenberg and replace him with Whitaker. I'd rather just put the best four on there though.

Talk talk is all he's got. It's his entire schtick. And his followers fall for it every time.

All things being equal (what those two offers essentially are) he would probably pick the winning team. If it was 4 million versus 2 million, a player would probably take the 4 million over winning.

I don't think a short-term deal at those salaries is an overpay for him. It would be a bad idea for the Tigers because they are probably going to lose with him or without him for a couple of years.

That's essentially equal. If the Tigers offered two years at that price and the Yankees offered one year, I think he'd take the Tigers offer.

I think it's more fun to play for a winning team, so all things being equal they would pick a winning team. However, I think in the vast majority of cases, money is the biggest factor for baseball players. If free agents tend to sign with winners, it's because winning teams have more money to spend either because they make bigger profits or because winning teams are more likely to take a risk on one player who could put them over the top.

Avila reminded me of a 70s or 80s GM. He'd go into the off-season telling us what needed to be done and he'd get it done, just not very well. I kind of liked that about him in a sentimental way, but it is too simplistic for today's game.

I got mine through TIAA. Right now, there is as 5 year CD at 5% at Capital One, McLean, VA. They have a 6 mo CD at 4.3% at Ally Bank, in Midvale, UT At the end of December, I'll be investing in another CD or treasury.
