  1. The Tigers have a small payroll and have shown that they can put together a strong pitching staff without spending a lot. So, it makes sense to spend some money on position players. It's not going kill them to take a chance on a guy in Bregman's class if the right match is available.
  2. THE 6TH INNING WAS TOO LATE SKOOBAL DIDNT GET IT DONE WHEN IT COUNTED HE DOESNT HAVE BALLS HE DOESNT HAVE THE CLUTCH GENE JACK MORRIS HAD THE CLUTCH GENE SKOOBAL DOESNT HINCH SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT
  3. If they can play major league games in Jarry Park, they can play them in a 27,000 seat football stadium. Jarry Park is definitely the coolest park I have been to.
  4. My ballot has been submitted. Straight Democrat even in some of the local races where I know little about the candidates.
  5. I think undecided might really mean: "undecided as to whether or not they are voting" which most likely includes more Harris voters than Trump voters.
  6. The correct answer is Montreal!
  7. yeah, WAR tries to measure player value as you describe, but I think catcher is still the most difficult position to measure. I am not sure you can measure how well a catcher works with his pitchers which may or may not be an important factor being missed. I believe this is what you are talking about in your last paragraph.
  8. Another thing about catchers is that they get beat up a lot and I think that means they tend to have a lot of variation in performance over time. I have no problem with teams carrying a strong defensive catcher who doesn't hit much.
  9. I remember that I couldn't listen to this game because it was too early to get good radio reception from Massachusetts. I was looking forward to the second game and I was disappointed that it was called. Even Ernie Harwell sounded disgusted. Anyway, the game was forfeited to the Tigers, so they did get a sweep, but they were 14 games out, so who cares. I just wanted to hear a game!
  10. Nice game for Pat Underwood.
  11. The money is not going to the establishment. It's going to him and his family.
  12. The first game of the disco demolition doubleheader:
  13. Now, there are still three weeks to go. I think the length of the playoffs makes them anti-climatic.
  14. Yes, but I think that would appy to all players. Torkelon has been one of their healhiest players physically, so my guess is there is something they want him to do with his mental approach to the season. It's just a guess though. I had the same immediate reaction as Bert.
  15. Perhaps, it means how he responds to the plans they have for him this off-season. Does he he want to just keep doing what he's been doing or will he show a strong committment to trying something different?
  16. When Hinch was talking about prospects who could be invited to Spring Training - he mentioned Clark, McGonigle and Liranzo. Who was the fourth one? It sounded like he said "Houston" but I am guessing Hao-Yu Lee.
  17. Harris has gotten much better at the press conference thing. He sounded more open and relaxed in this one that he had been in past press conferences. He answered questions really well for the most part. I have to admit though that I never heard the expression "covering shapes" before.
  18. lol, yeah, they do strikeout too much. I was thinking they were doing better during their stretch run, but that's not true either.
  19. Probably true and that has made the game worse. One of my biggest complaints about the modern game is there is not enough variety in players. Everyone is a power hitter who strikes out too much. It's been refreshing to see the Tigers get away from that somewhat this year.
  20. He was first player that came to mind when I read the article decades ago.
  21. That brings Cabrera to mind - someone who maintained enough batting skills to succeed but couldn't stay healthy. I don't think it was too difficult to predict that kind of outcome for him, although it was more severe than expected.
  22. Players like Baez, perhaps. Bill James used to talk about young player and old player skills. Young player skills were speed, making contact, defensive range. Old player skills were drawing walks and power. A player needed to be able to transition somewhat from young player to old player skills in order to age well. I don't know if any of the modern sabers have looked into that more thoroughly.
  23. Has there been any recent research on what kinds of players are most likely to age well? I am pretty sure players who have a broad range of skills and keep themselves in shape tend to do better than one dimensional players and heavy players, but what else? It seems that many teams have not really figured out a way to select the right players for long-term deals and it seems like there should be a system.
  24. But they had their best extended run from 2006-2013 when they added more salary than ever.
