Bad design is needing Greene and Tork to be all stars immediately to save your job. They might have saved Al if they were average players last year. Bad luck is Skubal and Mize getting hurt and Greene/Tork being below replacment level hitters.

Bad design prevents Greene and Torkelson from league average(.700 OPS)? They can't even be neutral players. They are both bad hitters at this point. Both were sure things to be at least decent.

You see successful organizations get production out of top draft picks. They also get production out of 'found money' prospcects who come out of nowhere. Tigers are getting below average/bad production from their top prospects and no found money outliers. It's a confluence of bad development, bad luck, and an owner who can't be shamed into to doing anything about it.

Torkelson has 600 major league at-bats and a .598 OPS. Good stuff.

The draft is a mixed bag for me. The first two picks were horrible in terms of positional value. But this is question for their judgement. They did not like the defensive ends/tackles/corners after Anderson and Weatherspoon were gone. And look at the the consensus draft boards vs how the draft went. The draft pundits were way off. Branch and LaPorta are good meat and potatoes picks. Increase the talent level and fill positions of short and long term need. The Western Kentucky Kid and the OL from William and Mary kid are the picks where you find a James Houston type. It's totally based on a workout or a conviction from a guy in your personnel department. They are exactly the kind of picks you make later in draft. Both guys could bust; one could be a contributor. At this point, it's how you develop players. And they have proved that they can develop guys they draft. And I love the fact that Holmes was willing to go up and down the board looking for opportunities to get more picks. Getting a 2025 4th is significant even if it doesn't give you value for 2 years. It can be moved in future trades. Don't forget they have a 2024 3rd for Hockenson. They want nothing to do with guys they didn't draft.
